THE POSITION
This recruitment is being conducted to fill one full-time vacancy. The list established by this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time part-time limited term and temporary vacancies for up to one year.
The City of Vallejo is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Transportation Superintendent. As a collaborative member of the Citys Public Works Department the Transportation Superintendent manages supervises plans and coordinates the Citys Transportation infrastructure plans and projects coordinate assigned activities with other Public Works divisions City departments outside agencies as well as the general public.
The ideal candidate for Transportation Superintendent will possess five years of responsible supervisory or administrative experience in transportation and public works activities including transportation planning project management and budget analysis for operational and capital budgets.
THE DEPARTMENT
The Public Works Department is responsible for the engineering design construction and maintenance of the Citys roads sidewalks traffic signals trees open spaces and buildings. The department also manages stormwater compliance programs transportation planning recycling & solid waste contract services and operates the Vallejo Municipal Marina.
THE CITY OF VALLEJO

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives administrative direction from the Public Works Director.
Exercises direct supervision over professional supervisory technical and contract staff.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and / or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Important responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to the following :
Coordinate the organization and operational activities of the Citys Transportation and other assigned Divisions including bus ferry and paratransit systems / programs.
Participate in the development and implementation of goals objectives policies and priorities for the Transportation and other assigned Divisions; identify resource needs; recommend and implement policies and procedures.
Select train motivate and evaluate personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures.
Plan direct coordinate and review the work plan for providing the Transportation and other assigned Divisions; meet with staff and contractors to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities and projects; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products service levels methods and procedures; identify and implement opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures.
Manage and participate in the development and administration of assigned Division(s) annual budget including analysis of operating and capital needs; identify additional funds needed for staffing contract services capital projects materials and supplies; direct the monitoring of and approval of expenditures; identify potential sources of funds for expenses; direct and implement adjustments as necessary.
Assume management responsibility for all services and activities of assigned Division(s) including adherence to short and long range plans contractor performance contract compliance and public satisfaction.
Coordinate the Transportation and other assigned Divisions with those of other divisions contractors and outside agencies and organizations.
Conduct a variety of organizational studies investigations and operational studies; recommend modifications to Division programs policies and procedures as appropriate.
Provide staff assistance to the Public Works Director City Council and related committees and boards; prepare and present agenda items staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
Serve as City representative on a variety of transit boards and commission meetings.
Oversee the administration of the Divisions safety programs; develop or direct the development of safety policies and procedures; resolve conflicts relating to safety issues.
Research and prepare bus / ferry routes and schedules; design and oversee the production of schedules brochures system maps and other printed materials.
Prepare vehicle / equipment specifications for requests for proposals.
Negotiate contracts with service providers and consultants; review and approve plans and specifications designs environmental documents reports and studies.
Prepare applications for and monitor provisions of grant funding of applicable programs.
Respond to inquiries and requests by members of the public regarding division and transit system policies procedures and services.
Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of mass transit planning.
Act in the absence of the Public Works Director as required.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :
Experience :
Five years of responsible supervisory of administrative experience in transportation and other public works activities.
Training :
A Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public administration transportation planning or a related field.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
The Recruitment & Selection Process
1. Applications are due by 5 : 00 P.M. on Monday December 1 2025. Applicants must submit a completed City of Vallejo online application including all responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire (Resume / Cover Letter Optional) by the posted deadline in order to be considered.

2. Applications will be screened for overall qualifications in the week of December 1 2025.
3. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their supplemental responses scored by Subject Matter Experts the Week of December 8 2025. The most qualified applicants from the scoring of the supplement questions will be invited for an Oral Panel Interview.
4. Oral Panel Interviews are tentatively scheduled to take place in the week of January 5 2026. Oral Panel Interviews are weighed at 100% of the candidates score. Candidates must achieve a minimum passing score of 70%. Those achieving 70% or higher will be placed on the Register of Eligibles (eligible list) and may be considered to fill positions for up to one year.
The City reserves the right to limit the number of candidates to those determined to be best qualified based upon all requested application materials including training and experience current resume and responses to supplemental questions.
5. Candidates placed on the Register of Eligibles (eligible list) will be referred to the department for final interviews based on their performance in the exam. The number of candidates referred for a hiring interview is at the discretion of the hiring department.
