Overview
The Opportunity : Head Start is hiring a Teacher (Early Childhood Program Specialist 3) for our newest center, Sue Krienen Early Learning Center (SKELC) located next to Skagit Valley College. This role will teach a class of up to eight children ages 20 months to 3 years old. This is a year-round, 40-hour per week position with benefits eligibility. The center location within the specified area may be moved temporarily or reassigned to support program operations.
This position provides leadership in fostering holistic, developmentally appropriate child development through a structured, play-based early education approach. Responsibilities include promoting social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth and ensuring each child receives quality, equitable education and support to prepare them for future school readiness. The role uses a research and evidence-based curriculum and assessment system and may involve travel for pre-scheduled meetings and trainings.
The head start program is grant-funded; extension of the position depends on continuation of funding.
Location
Skagit Valley College is on the traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish People, with campuses and centers in Mount Vernon, Oak Harbor, Friday Harbor, Anacortes, and Burlington. The Sue Krienen Early Learning Center is located at 2011 N. LaVenture Road, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. Travel to other locations will be required for some meetings and trainings.
Responsibilities
- Provide continuous active supervision as established in the center's Active Supervision Plan.
- Plan and supervise the setup of an organized, nurturing, safe classroom appropriate for the age group, based on curriculum fidelity tools.
- Plan embedded strategies and practices for classroom routines to support all children's progress toward school readiness goals, including children with IFSP or IEP goals and dual language learners.
- Welcome children, parents, and visitors to the classroom; engage children through play to support development and align with the program's ongoing assessment.
- Work collaboratively with LEA or Part C, school districts, therapists, and community partners to implement IEP / IFSP goals.
- Lead the daily schedule for the classroom and provide direction to interns, volunteers, and substitute teachers as needed.
- Plan for and engage parents, interns, volunteers, and visitors in classroom activities; mentor interns and team members in partnership with the education manager and coach.
- Use positive, strengths-based language with children and maintain professional interactions with parents and staff.
Health, Safety, and Nutrition
Conduct playground safety checks.Provide daily meal routines, model appropriate mealtime behaviors, and engage in conversations that support language development.Assist children with toileting needs, including diaper changes, and perform daily health checks as needed.Administer first aid and handle medical emergencies; may administer prescribed or approved medications.Support the individualized health needs of each child; clean and sanitize as required; assist with general center maintenance.Be flexible to support various tasks within the center, including food prep, service, and other operational tasks as needed.Administrative and Program Requirements
Lead classroom planning sessions using the curriculum and child outcomes data; document planning and individualization using program forms or digital tools.Document attendance, meal service, and ongoing observational data related to GOLD assessments.Complete developmental and / or behavioral screenings within required timelines; document child information in online systems.Provide four educational visits per family (including two home visits); participate in center team meetings and family reviews; mentor classroom assistants, volunteers, and interns; support parent committee meetings and trainings.Professional Development and Program Support
Complete annual required trainings (e.g., Blood Borne Pathogens, CPS, Active Supervision, Food Handlers, Right Response, USDA) and sign confidentiality and code of conduct forms.Engage in program trainings and coaching; complete at least 15 hours of classroom-related training each year.Maintain reliability in program assessment tools and good attendance to optimize child outcomes; complete job-related documentation accurately and timely; participate in program committees as desired.Minimum Qualifications
Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or related field with ECE credits equivalent to the WA State ECE certificate; fluent in English; at least three years of experience in an early learning classroom.OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in ECE or related field with ECE credits equivalent to the WA State ECE certificate.Bilingual in English and Spanish.Experience working with children who have IFSP or IEP.Salary and Benefits
Salary is based on Range 42, Step A, $3,643 per month with increments to $4,740 per month; starting salary may depend on education, qualifications, and experience.Overtime eligible in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act; grant funding dependent.Union-represented position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.Retirement, medical, dental, vision, and other benefits per state regulations; details at the PEBB plan site.Conditions of Employment and Application Procedure
