WASATCH COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE : Professional Standards Director GRADE NUMBER : Grade R $97,281-$104,769 EFFECTIVE DATE : September, 2025 DEPARTMENT : Sheriff JOB SUMMARY Under direction of the Sheriff, supports general Sheriffs Office operations in coordinating, reviewing, and participating in the work of staff responsible for supporting law enforcement operations in the areas of patrol, investigations, corrections, communications and other divisions of the Wasatch County Sheriffs Office. Ensures internal affairs investigations maintain a trustworthy and compliant system within the Office. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Plans, prioritizes, assigns, coordinates, and reviews work related to functions and programs in the Sheriffs Office. Manages the accreditation programs of the Sheriffs Office, including professional standards, self-audits, inspections, compliance and reporting processes.. Oversees and conducts internal affairs and pre-employment background investigations. Assists Sheriff in ensuring accreditation, internal affairs and pre-employment background investigations continue to be conducted according to the governing law and professional standards of the industry. Assists Sheriff in working and communicating with the Deputy Sheriff Merit Commission. Prepares various reports related to Sheriffs Office operations and activities. Conducts internal affairs investigation meetings with appropriate individuals, including investigators and support staff, interviewing complainants, employees, witnesses, victims and others.. Presents reports and regular updates through chain-of-command and outside agencies as required. Assists Sheriff, administration and support staff in responding to citizen requests for information. Assists Sheriff and administration, support staff and public information officers in preparing press releases and other lawful requests for information related to accreditation and internal affairs investigations. Assists Sheriff and administration in building and maintaining cooperative working relationships with professional and educational organizations, partner agencies and the general public. Attends and participates in various community functions and meetings. Responds to department inquiries and provides solutions. Creates and manages interdepartmental communications. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work activities. Ability to oversee and conduct internal affairs investigations and background investigations. Skill in written and verbal communication. Knowledge of various computer applications including, but not limited to word processing, data entry, spreadsheets, Lexipol, Target Solutions, Vector Solutions, and Acadis. Ability to distill relevant and useful elements from vast amounts of information. Working knowledge of the principles of local government administrations, specifically in a law enforcement setting and personnel administration. Ability to use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Knowledge of basic reading, writing, and math. Skill in report writing. Ability to understand and follow clear work instructions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Typically sit at a desk or table. Occasionally walk, stand, or stoop. Occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Use tools or equipment requiring a degree of dexterity. Work for periods of time maintaining concentrated attention to detail. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed in an office, library, computer room, or other environmentally controlled room. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Requires equivalent to a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice or related field of study. Fluency in Spanish-speaking is desirable. At least Ten (10) years broad executive-level law enforcement or investigative experience. Extensive administrative experience in medium to large-sized law enforcement or other investigate agency. Five (5) years including supervisory experience. Keyboarding skills at 40 WPM net. LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION Utah State drivers license
