Job Description
The Drainage Engineer will be responsible for the design, analysis, and documentation of storm water management systems, grading, and hydrologic / hydraulic components for residential, commercial, and municipal development projects. This role requires practical experience with drainage design software, a strong understanding of civil site design principles, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with engineering and CAD teams.
Job Functions and Responsibilities
- Prepare / review drainage design calculations, hydrology studies, and storm water management reports.
- Lead hydrologic & hydraulic studies using HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, PC-SWMM, SRH-2D, etc.
- Develop / seal drainage reports, FEMA LOMR / MT-2 submittals, and drainage design plans.
- Perform watershed-scale flood risk analysis, inundation mapping, and storm water conveyance / detention design.
- Oversee junior engineers / EITs and provide structured technical mentorship.
- Support and / or lead grant funding efforts — including FEMA BRIC, CDBG-MIT, GLO, and flood bond initiatives.
- Develop plans for storm sewer systems, detention / retention facilities, and surface drainage improvements using AutoCAD Civil 3D, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and other pertinent technologies. Workable knowledge with SWMM programs is a plus.
- Develop drainage mitigation strategies, detention sizing, and flood risk solutions with consideration of cost effectiveness and construct-ability.
- Execute both public-sector (e.g., HCFCD, SJRA, counties) and private land development entitlement projects.
- Perform water network and distribution system analysis, modeling, and design.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and CAD staff to integrate drainage systems with grading, roadway, and utility designs.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling using software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, and StormCAD.
- Conduct site visits to assess existing drainage conditions to support design recommendations.
- Interpret / apply local, state, federal drainage design standards and permitting requirements.
- Assist in preparing project documentation for submittals and regulatory approvals.
- Support junior staff in drainage calculations and design methods.
- Interface confidently with floodplain administrators, county review authorities, public stakeholders, and major developers.
- Ensure compliance with company standards. Maintain organized project files / documentation.
- Participate in proposal development, scope writing, and client presentations.

Bachelor’s degree in Civil / Water Resources Engineering or related discipline.PE license preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.4–8+ years of experience in drainage and stormwater design for land development, site, or infrastructure projects.Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and hydrology / hydraulic modeling software (HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, StormCAD, HydroCAD, SWMM).Strong understanding of local and state drainage design standards.Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.Strong leadership, client-facing, and cross-disciplinary coordination abilities.Strong technical writing, organization, and communication skills.CFM certification is a plus.
