Position description

Ladder Rank Faculty Position - Assistant Professor

Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics

University of California, San Francisco

The UCSF Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is seeking faculty to join our vibrant, collaborative, and supportive discovery research community at the Mission Bay Campus in San Francisco.

We seek creative, innovative scientists who define and address fundamental questions in any area of modern biology, including but not limited to basic and biomedical sciences, biochemistry, evolutionary biology, structural biology, cell biology, developmental biology, systems biology, and computational biology.

We provide faculty with resources to effectively launch their program, including a strong mentoring culture, a highly competitive start-up package, administrative support, and facilities for advanced light and cryo-electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, high-throughput small molecule screening, cytometry, and state-of-the-art animal care.

Tenure-track faculty candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, to have demonstrated significant research accomplishment and potential, and to be committed to the mentorship of students and to promoting the success of our diverse student population. The successful candidate will establish a dynamic and interactive research program and join one or more of our top-ranked interdisciplinary graduate programs (see https : / / graduate.ucsf.edu / list-programs ).

UCSF offers competitive salaries, research set-up funds, and recruitment allowances, and has numerous opportunities for faculty development and further training in mentorship.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5 . The minimum base salary range for this position is $121,900-$157,900. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.

Applications must be submitted online at https : / / aprecruit.ucsf.edu / JPF05702 with the following materials :

Biosketch / Curriculum Vitae - note that while we will accept any format, we prefer a modified NIH-style biosketch with the following sections :

  • A. Personal Statement. This section should describe your overarching research vision and why you are well-suited for our department. Relevant factors may include : aspects of your training; your previous experimental or theoretical work; the collaborators you envision working with at UCSF; how you would benefit from and contribute to the scientific environment at UCSF; the key goals of your future research program. This section should be no longer than 300 words. Note that unlike a standard NIH biosketch there is no need to include ongoing and completed research projects from the past three years that you want to draw attention to (as this overlaps with section B). There is also no need to cite up to four publications or research products that highlight your experience and qualifications (as this overlaps with section C).
  • B. Position, Scientific Appointments and Honors. List in reverse chronological order all current positions and scientific appointments. This section should also include all awards, scholarships, traineeships, fellowships, and development awards.
  • C. Contributions to Science. Briefly describe up to five of your most significant contributions to science. The description of each contribution should be no longer than 300 words. For each contribution, include the following :
  • The historical background that frames the scientific problem;
  • The central finding(s);
  • The influence of the finding(s) on the progress of science or the application of those finding(s) to health or technology; and;
  • Your specific role in the described work. Figures, tables, or graphics are not allowed. For each contribution, you may cite up to four publications or research products that are relevant to the contribution. You may cite published papers or publicly available preprints deposited on a server (e.g. BioRxiv). Note that we will not accept confidential manuscripts as attachments to the application.
  • D. Link to published work. Include a single link to your published work (including preprints), NIH My Bibliography, Google Scholar, or ORCID are all acceptable.
  • A description of future research plans; Ideally, this is 2 pages, including figures - but not including references.
  • A one-page teaching statement, including formal and informal mentoring activities; and
  • Applicants should request three letters of recommendation.
  • Applicant materials must list current and / or pending qualifications upon submission. The selected candidate must meet all of the qualifications at the time of appointment.

Review will begin on October 15, 2025. Interviews will occur in two phases : video conference in December followed by in-person visits in January. Please direct inquiries about the position and suggestions of potential candidates to Bch-Faculty.Search@ucsf.edu .
