Job Summary
This position is located within DC Health's, HIV / AIDS,STD & TB (HAHSTA), School Health Division. This position will be situated within a school within the District of Columbia.
Major Duties And Responsibilities
Delivers direct nursing care to students, including first aid, medication administration, chronic disease management, emergency interventions, and health screenings, ensuring adherence to clinical best practices. Leads and provides clinical support to Clinical Nurse II’s, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Nurse Assistants across assigned schools, ensuring care delivery aligns with nursing standards and scope of practice regulations.
Serves as a clinical resource for complex medical cases, offering consultation and support to school health staff and facilitating appropriate interventions, referrals, and care coordination. Promotes health education by providing guidance and resources to students, staff, and families on disease prevention, chronic condition management, and overall wellness initiatives. Mentors, coaches, and conduct on-site training for assigned nursing staff, reinforcing clinical competencies, emergency protocols, infection control measures, and documentation practices.
Monitors and audits clinical documentation, including medication administration records, treatment logs, and health incident reports to ensure accuracy, compliance, and quality of care. Tracks and analyzes student health data related to immunizations, screenings, chronic disease management, and emerging health trends, supporting program improvements and public health reporting. Facilitates communication and collaboration among nursing staff, school administrators, families, and community healthcare providers to ensure seamless care coordination and support for student health needs.
Qualifications And Education
A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education(external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs(external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School : Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure
In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Experience
The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.
Working Conditions / Environment
The work may be performed in both an office and on-site in health care facilities, clinics, or other non-traditional settings. The incumbent may be required to work with clients who may have communicable diseases. Such situations may require the nurse to take specific safety precautions.
