Overview

Oceaneering Space Systems (OSS) develops, integrates, and applies new and innovative technologies to meet the challenges of working in space and other harsh environments. Position : Space Environments Engineer on the NASA JSC Engineering, Technology, and Science (JETS) II contract. As an integral part of the Engineering Department in the Materials Analysis section, you will contribute to NASA JSC programs on the JETS II contract and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to meet and exceed standards.

International travel may be required. Straight time overtime, a 9 / 80 work schedule (every other Friday off), and / or 1 day of telework per week may be available.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support as a space environments engineer for multiple NASA programs including Gateway and Axiom Station.
  • Provide systems engineering support with space environments requirements and verification activities, working with NASA civil servants and designated contractors.
  • Evaluate induced environmental hazards between space station elements and visiting vehicles.
  • Conduct systems engineering trade studies in the form of modeling / analysis activities to identify potential contamination risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and update semi-empirical and theoretical models.
  • Analyze / model molecular contamination and transport of contaminants from sources such as outgassing, vacuum venting, and thruster plumes onto external surfaces.
  • Analyze / model plasma effects and spacecraft charging.
  • Analyze / model radiation transport and effects to materials.
  • Assess compatibility of spacecraft hardware with natural and induced space environments.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • REQUIRED : Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering and two (2) or more years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g., M.S. or Ph.D.).
  • Experience with CAD and 3D modeling software (Creo, SolidWorks, etc.).
  • Experience with meshing and / or finite element analysis software (Femap, NX Advanced Simulation, Ansys, Thermal Desktop, HyperWorks, etc.).
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in computer programming.
  • Strong analytical and computational skills (CFD and thermal analysis skills / experience are transferable).
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary field; effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency and be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • PREFERRED :
  • Additional degree levels (M.S. / Ph.D.) in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Nuclear), Physics or Chemistry; GPA 3.0 or higher; 5+ years of related experience; experience with coding (Fortran, Python, C++, MATLAB); HPC / LINUX experience; knowledge of space environments and related models; experience with software to implement analytical models; experience with relevant tools (NASCAP, SPIS, SPENVIS, MCNP, etc.).
