Performs specialized work in the planning, conducting and / or supervising of original research. Responsible for participating in, planning, scheduling and / or supervising research projects and the interpretation of the results for publication. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants. Adherence to robust safety practices and compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations are responsibilities of all employees.

Major / Essential Functions

Molecular Biology Experiments

  • Perform RNA isolation, quality assessment, and quantification from human and rodent tissues or cell lines.
  • Carry out quantitative PCR (qPCR), RT-PCR, and small RNA library preparation for sequencing.
  • Analyze microRNA expression profiles using targeted assays or high-throughput technologies.

miRNA Data Analysis and Bioinformatics

  • Analyze miRNA expression datasets (e.g., from RNA-seq, NanoString, or qPCR arrays).
  • Use bioinformatics tools to identify differentially expressed miRNAs across ischemic stroke and Alzheimer's disease samples.
  • Perform pathway and target prediction analyses using tools such as Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, TargetScan, or miRDB.
  • Cellular and In Vitro Functional Assays

  • Conduct gain- and loss-of-function studies using miRNA mimics / inhibitors in relevant cell models (e.g., neuronal, glial, or iPSC-derived cells).
  • Assess cellular outcomes such as viability, mitochondrial function, apoptosis, or synaptic integrity in response to miRNA manipulation.
  • Collaboration and Documentation

  • Work closely with PI, postdocs, and other lab members to design experiments and troubleshoot protocols.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records, protocols, and data files.
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation, figure generation, and presentations for scientific meetings.
  • Maintain lab equipment and ensure availability of reagents related to RNA work.
  • Train junior lab members or students on miRNA techniques and lab protocols as needed.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of microRNA biology and its relevance to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and ischemic stroke.
  • Hands-on experience with RNA isolation and qPCR, particularly for microRNA expression analysis.
  • Proficiency in culturing and maintaining mammalian cells, including neuronal or glial cell models.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret gene expression data, including differential expression and pathway analysis.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills to ensure data integrity and reproducibility.
  • Ability to work independently, troubleshoot experiments, and manage time effectively.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for data presentation and collaboration.
  • Willingness and ability to train and assist junior lab members, including students and interns.
  • Required Qualifications

    Master's degree or specialized academic training beyond the Bachelor's level in a specialized field equivalent to a Master's degree. One year research experience. Knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources, and standards thereof.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field.Prior research experience in microRNA biology, neurodegenerative diseases (especially Alzheimer's disease), or ischemic stroke.
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals relevant to neuroscience, molecular biology, or RNA research.
  • Experience working in a collaborative, multi-investigator research environment.
  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Hands-on experience with RNA-seq or small RNA sequencing workflows, including library preparation and QC.
  • Bioinformatics skills for miRNA data analysis, such as using R, Python, or specialized tools (e.g., DESeq2, TargetScan, miRDB, Ingenuity Pathway Analysis).
  • Previous research experience in Alzheimer's disease and / or ischemic stroke models (in vitro or in vivo).
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to peer-reviewed publications or scientific presentations.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new techniques and protocols in a fast-paced research environment.
  • Experience coordinating with multi-institutional or interdisciplinary research teams.
