Summary

This position is responsible for managing NAB’s ATSC 3.0 broadcast chains and networking systems in the NAB technology lab and will be the lead field engineer for NAB’s Broadcast Positioning System (BPS). It requires a skilled and experienced television broadcast engineer to play a hands-on role in ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of the NAB television broadcast lab. There will be a particular emphasis on successfully configuring and operating multiple ATSC 3.0 systems, including IT, IP networking and RF distribution in a multi-vendor broadcast lab environment. This position will also play a leadership role with BPS, including field work with NAB member stations and engagement with relevant technology partners and government agencies. The ideal candidate will bring a deep understanding of broadcast technology, a proven track record in troubleshooting and problem-solving, and a passion for delivering next-generation television experiences.

Essential Functions

Oversee the day-to-day technical operation and maintenance of ATSC 3.0 broadcast equipment, including encoders, schedulers / packagers, gateways, exciters and IP network switches and routers.

Leverage strong IT and IP networking expertise to maintain and optimize lab infrastructure. Program and configure software operating in virtual environments, ethernet switches and other equipment to facilitate the efficient flow of data across the lab network.

Manage signal processing equipment and RF distribution systems to ensure the seamless flow of audio, video and data (including BPS) throughout the broadcast chains.

Conduct routine inspections, preventative maintenance and repairs to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Maintain detailed, accurate and up-to-date documentation for all broadcast systems, software licenses, configurations and procedures. Create and update technical manuals and training materials as needed.

Consult and advise on BPS development, integration, support and engineering concerns.

Work with BPS and timing measurement instruments such as oscilloscopes and frequency counters. Conduct field measurements of BPS signals. Develop measurement and calibration processes of BPS transmission systems and test receivers.

Share ATSC 3.0 and BPS engineering best practices with NAB members and the industry via Technology Department programs, partner organization programs and at NAB Show, NAB Show New York and other NAB conferences and gatherings.

Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in television broadcasting. This includes evaluating and recommending new equipment and technologies, with a focus on IP-based solutions, to enhance the efficiency and capabilities of the broadcast facility.

Required Education and Experience

Four-year degree and 10+ years of related experience

Excellent engineering, IT, IP networking and problem-solving skills.

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work cross-functionally.

Ability to travel 25% throughout the year.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience developing and managing ATSC 3.0 broadcast television systems.

Operations engineer experience at a TV station.

Track record of solid project management.

Work Location and Schedule

This position is eligible for NAB's Hybrid Work Schedule of three days in the D.C. office each week.
