Job description

Corrections Supervisor I

The immediate vacancy is at the Halawa Correctional Facility, located in Halawa Valley. Salary : $6,043 to $7,351 per month (SR-24, Step D to I). Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors. A continuous recruitment may be closed at any time. Supervises the operations of a complex functional unit in a correctional facility; and performs other duties as required. A position in this class is characterized by 24-hour responsibility for a fully developed, complex program of correctional services for offenders including such activities as diagnosis, classification, social casework, education, religion, recreation, medical, dental, psychological, and psychiatric services. To efficiently carry out these functions, a position at this level develops or recommends new standards, guides, and approaches in solving unusual or unprecedented problems and directs and coordinates the work of a staff of specialists.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements : Legal Authorization to Work : The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States. Education : A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in sociology, psychology, criminology, penology, criminal justice administration or other related behavioral science or criminal justice field. General Experience : Two years of progressively responsible professional experience which demonstrated knowledge and application of the behavioral and social sciences as they relate to redirecting or rehabilitating persons with behavioral social problems. Specialized Experience : One year of responsible professional experience in criminal justice or related social science program having as a major function the provision of rehabilitative / redirection services to law offenders. Such experience must have demonstrated the applicant's knowledge of the philosophy, principles, concepts and practices relating to criminal justice or allied offender rehabilitative / redirection programs and may have been gained in one or a combination of A or B below : A. Social Service Experience : Professional counseling or other professional experience which involved providing rehabilitative / redirection services (e.g., education, employment training, substance abuse treatment) to law offenders within criminal justice or closely allied agencies or organizations (e.g., police, courts, corrections, parole, residential treatment programs, community restitution, etc.). The work must have demonstrated responsibility for assessing individual needs, establishing specific goals and individually oriented rehabilitation / redirection plans, carrying out individual rehabilitation plans, evaluating progress of the individual and revising rehabilitation / redirection plans as necessary, and collaborating with others who are involved in the rehabilitation / redirection of these individuals. B. Staff Specialist Experience : Professional work in a criminal justice or closely allied social service program having as a major function the provision of rehabilitative / redirection services (e.g., education, employment training, substance abuse treatment) to law offenders, and demonstrated responsibility for the development, modification and evaluation of rehabilitative / redirection programs, and the development and revision of program policies and procedures. Supervisory Aptitude : Supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience may be accepted. Supervisory Aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion or regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects of supervision, e.g., by serving as a group or team leader; or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; or by the completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; and / or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential. Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements, will apply. CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK AND COMPREHENSIVE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION : You will be required to sign an Applicant's Consent, Authorization and Request to Release Information Waiver. This gives your consent and authorization to release any and all records, information, and opinions regarding your background, education, employment, character and reputation needed by the Department of Human Resources Development and / or the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to make a thorough investigation to determine your fitness and suitability for employment with the State of Hawaii. This authorization shall apply to include all criminal history records, information and opinions, military records, all educational and employment history records, and traffic abstract records. For this purpose, you waive any and all privileges you may have to maintain such records, information and opinions as confidential, including but not limited to the privileges arising out of the foregoing relationships. Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement : As required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA), Federal law states that "....an agency shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with inmates and who : (1) Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution. (2) Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse. (3) Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in #2 above. (4) Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
