Job description

Position : TRADES TECH II

Agency : Orange County Public Schools

Job Overview : Under administrative direction, the purpose of this supervisory position is to plan, organize, coordinate, direct, and implement school district maintenance, repair, and construction activities within the facilities maintenance division and / or one or more of the craft civil or mechanical trades (e.g., HVAC, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, asphalt, concrete, refrigeration, roofing, warehousing, communications). The incumbent may be assigned to a specific functional area such as construction management. Essential functions are performed according to the area of assignment and are performed as directed.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS in a positive light.
  • Provide planning, organization, coordination, direction, and implementation in maintenance, repair, and construction activities associated with craft civil or mechanical trades.
  • Collaborate with district maintenance and construction teams, private / public contractors, and school administration to plan, coordinate, and execute projects.
  • Review and assist in the preparation of contracts, bids, and specifications for vendors and contractors.
  • Critically review maintenance, service, repair, or construction orders and requests, and assess feasibility.
  • Act as the point of contact between facility construction and maintenance teams and may follow projects from planning through warranty periods.
  • Enter warranty work requests for new construction and coordinate with contractors to ensure completion.
  • Conduct site inspections to determine project specifications, manpower allocation, and materials requirements.
  • Prioritize and coordinate project specifics and supervise personnel under charge.
  • Inspect ongoing projects, report status, and ensure adherence to approved plans and specifications.
  • Plan and schedule major repairs, renovations, and construction projects to minimize disruption to district activities.
  • Inspect and monitor contractual work for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Assist in unit management by preparing budget documents, monitoring expenditures, and developing planning schedules.
  • Ensure safety and accident prevention policies, codes, ordinances, and building standards are followed.
  • Maintain accurate logs and reports of work performed, purchase orders, invoices, and material requests.
  • Determine whether work should be performed in-house or contracted out.
  • Respond to emergency or critical maintenance orders and prevent hazardous conditions.
  • Oversee proper care of equipment, tools, and vehicles, ensuring safe operation.
  • Stay current on relevant technologies and update skills as required.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation and information.

  • Minimum Training and Experience

    High school diploma and five (5) years of progressively responsible and technically skilled work in facilities maintenance or any craft civil or mechanical trade, with a portion in a lead worker capacity that demonstrates ability to coordinate, delegate, and inspect tasks. Demonstrated knowledge of applicable laws, codes, and regulations. Vocational / technical training in trades preferred. Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.

  • Physical Ability : Ability to exert very heavy effort, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift, carry, push, and pull up to 100 pounds (or more).
  • Sensory Requirements : Ability to perceive and discriminate colors, sounds, depths, and visual information; oral communication skills required.
  • Environmental Factors : Exposure to dust, fumes, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature extremes, noise, electrical currents, lighting, and toxic agents.
