Building Safety Inspector I (Structural)

Reviews residential building plans to ensure compliance with uniform statewide building codes. Provides building code information to the general public, architects, and engineers. Performs ensure building inspections are within Virginia building codes city code and design standards.

Essential functions include but are not limited to :

  • Verifies that field construction complies with code requirements and within the approved plans.
  • Review construction methods related to the installation of the building's structural components.
  • Consults with contractors, architects, engineers, and building managers to discuss projects and resolve problems.
  • Provides information and enforcement by providing technical information in writing and / or verbal regarding code issues.
  • Ensures quality, accuracy, and completeness of all projects and their accompanying reports.
  • Conduct field inspections and investigations concerning inspections for repairs, modifications, new work, and complaints.
  • Develops and maintains written records of inspections, inspection results, notices of violations, inspection approvals and those requiring corrective action.
  • Ability to use computer software for data entry and review of inspection status.

Education / Experience Required :

  • One year of experience and general knowledge in at least one of the following areas : building construction, building, fire or housing inspections, plumbing, electrical or mechanical trades, fire protection, elevators, property maintenance, real estate, land use, or zoning.
  • Academic courses or areas of concentration required to perform the required job duties : Work requires the ability to read and interpret building code manuals, documents, and general correspondence. Work requires building knowledge and language.
  • Requires working with contractors, engineers, architects and other city personnel.
  • High School or GED Preferred : Vocational / Technical School Associate's degree Three years of experience and general knowledge in at one of the following areas : general contracting, building construction and / or building trades.
  • Additional Information & Requirements :

  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Certification in the appropriate subject area must be obtained within 18 months of employment, including but limited to : Residential Building Inspector, Commercial Building Inspector.
  • Special Police Commission required within 6 months of appointment.
  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Temporary / seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
  • Retirement If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
