The Opportunity

This opportunity to join the Department of Pediatrics at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor is an exciting one. Columbia University Irving Medical Center is one of the nation's foremost academic health science center's working together with one of the nation's premier health systems, New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and New York-Presbyterian Hospital are recruiting for a full-time academic pediatric faculty member to lead the Pediatric Cellular Immunotherapy Program in the Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor (commensurate with credentials) on the non-tenure track. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with the outstanding clinical and research faculty within the division and at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, the NCI-designated Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Mailman School of Public Health. Columbia University Irving Medical Center has a Cellular Immunotherapy Laboratory capable of producing immune cells under current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) guidelines and meeting the FDA safety and quality regulations, and recently established the Columbia Initiative in Cell Engineering and Therapy (CICET) to enhance development of novel therapies.

Founded in 1959, The Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant at Columbia Children's Health, New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital (MSCH) is one of the oldest and most comprehensive centers in the country focused on treating children with cancer and blood disorders. MSCH has 202 inpatient pediatric beds, including a 54-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and 10 operating rooms. Our division is currently composed of 3 sections (Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation) with 21 full-time faculty, 4 research RN / NP's, 8 clinical research associates, and 2 regulatory specialists and includes an ACGME-accredited Fellowship Program and a FACT-accredited stem cell transplant program.

The successful candidate will care for patients receiving cellular immunotherapies (such as CAR T-cells), including pre- and post-infusion, develop clinical standards and guidelines for patients receiving these therapies, and provide oversight of clinical operations and clinical research related to cellular immunotherapies for pediatric oncology patients. They will collaborate with investigators at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the NCI-designated Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICC) to develop and / or participate in PI-initiated clinical trials of novel immunotherapeutic treatments, and will be expected to oversee a robust pediatric clinical trials portfolio that will also include consortium and industry-sponsored trials. Clinical research related to acute and late complications, patient-reported outcomes, identification of prognostic factors, and impact of health-care disparities would also be encouraged. The ideal candidate should have expertise in the care of patients receiving CAR T-cells and other immunotherapeutic treatments, experience in conducting clinical trials and leading other clinical research initiatives, an established record of peer-reviewed scholarship and extramural grant funding or equivalent career development funding. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to partner with the outstanding clinical and laboratory research faculty at CUIMC, including within the Departments of Pediatrics, Medical Oncology and Pathology, as well as with members of the NCI-designated Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center Cancer Cell Therapy Initiative.

Key Responsibilites

In addition to the care of patients receiving cellular immunotherapies, the successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the care of other pediatric oncology patients being cared for by the Pediatric Oncology section and / or Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant section.

  • Clinical responsibilities will include serving as attending physician on the inpatient oncology service and / or HSCT service and providing outpatient care to children, adolescents and young adults with oncologic disorders.
  • Administrative responsibilities will include oversight of Pediatric Cellular Immunotherapy program, including its clinical operations, as well as development of SOP's and clinical guidelines.
  • Research responsibilities include leading and expanding clinical research efforts in pediatric oncology related to the administration of cellular immunotherapies and oversight of clinical research staff.
