Summary :
Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining center to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts; responsible for any and all layouts, machining, dismantling, drawing, fitting or assembly work necessary to manufacture or repair parts for using production or plant maintenance by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This shall not be construed as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the job. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
Plans necessary working procedures.
Lays out the stock for work and performs layout work for other maintenance personnel.
Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or metal stock surfaces, using measuring and marking devices (such as calibrated ruler, micrometer, caliper and scriber) as guides for subsequent machining.
Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jog borers, grinders, and shapers, and grinds all types and styles of tool bits, blades, etc.
Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
Starts and observes machine and equipment operation and listens to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, determines the need for adjustments / repairs, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
Makes special jigs, fixtures, or attachments, whenever necessary or as instructed. Verifies conformance of finished work-piece to specification using precision measuring instruments.
Alternates / rotates from machine to machine, fit up to assembly, or job to job.
Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
Sets up and operates variety of machine tools and fits / assembles parts to fabricate or repair machine tools and maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures.
Operates any type or size of machine tool to allow minimum time for metal removal, accuracy of dimensions, and required finish while meeting all accuracy requirements such as running, drive or shrink fits, and any type of finish required in the job specifications.
Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools and power tools.
Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly using measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges and gauge blocks. Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
Repairs machine tools and keeps them clean and well lubricated.
Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts and polishing lathe to polish tube mill rolls.
Determines type and dimension of metal stock required by studying blueprints, sketches, machine parts or specifications.
Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or production problems.
Performs any dismantling or assembly work necessary to either fit parts, align or complete assembly equipment in the shop or field.
Operates grinding machine to grind flat and convex surfaces of tube mill rolls, cut off jaws, shafts, interior and exterior surfaces of bearings, etc.
Produces new or replacement parts, which may or may not have blueprints, that is required to maintain or improve plant operations, in a timely manner.
Fits and assembles machined parts into complete units, applying the ability of materials and layout techniques.
Directs machinist apprentice in performing required work.
Other duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE
One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGESKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must successfully complete all requirements and standards during a term of a 4-year state-approved Machinist Apprenticeship program. Requirements and standards of the state-approved Machinist Apprenticeship program consist of, but are not limited to, the successful completion of a total of 1,256 classroom hours as prescribed by the company and / or Apprenticeship Board, as well as required related on-the-job experience requirement of 8,000 hours.
Additionally, must understand at least four (4) of the five (5) maintenance disciplines : Electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, plumbing, and welding, and have a working knowledge of the fifth discipline (welding) through formal training.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
