The City of Virginia Beach Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation's Code Enforcement division is seeking a Code Enforcement Inspector to conduct inspections of the city's existing structures and properties to address code violations through enforcement of the Virginia Maintenance Code and the city's property maintenance codes. Code inspectors investigate complaints and patrol their assigned area for building and property maintenance code violations. They notify property owners of violations and take appropriate legal action to obtain compliance.
Duties include:
State certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector must be obtained within 18 monthsfrom the date of employment in accordance with the Virginia Certification Standards.
This position may be filled as either a Code Inspector I or Code Inspector II based on the selected applicant's qualifications. State certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector and attendance at the required state training modules are required to start at the Code Inspector II level position. The associated pay grades and starting salaries are as follows:

Minimum Requirements:
CODE INSPECTOR I MINIMUMS: High school or GED plus four (4) years experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities in fields such as general building construction, building, fire or housing code inspections, and/or plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems; or positions working in the field and with the public conducting inspections, investigations, and/or explaining regulations for compliance; or any equivalent combination of education (above high school), training, and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid drivers license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must obtain certification as a Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector within 18 months from date of employment in accordance with the Virginia Certification Standards.
CODE INSPECTOR II MINIMUMS: High school or GED plus five (5) years’ experience in such positions as Housing Code Inspector or Property Maintenance Inspector utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Successful completion of state-mandated Core and Property Maintenance Training Modules and certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector; successful completion of the four (4) modules (Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing) that are required for certification as a One- and Two-Family Combination Inspector or Residential Combination Inspector. Must have a current and valid driver’s license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This level requires successful completion of the four (4) modules (Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing) that are required for certification as a One- and Two-Family Combination Inspector or Residential Combination Inspector; but does not require certification as a One- and Two-Family Combination Inspector or Residential Combination Inspector. Must maintain certification as a Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector by completing the required continuing education classes within the timeframe prescribed by Virginia Certification Standards.
