Job description

Graduate Assistant Position

The Office of Development facilitates philanthropic support for outstanding education, research, and community partnerships within the UMD School of Public Health. The Development team also partners with the SPH Alumni Network Board to engage more than 22,000 SPH alumni.

The Development Graduate Assistant plays an important role by providing administrative support to the Assistant Dean for Development and the Development Program Manager and participating in fundraising cultivation.

Job duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Prepare profiles on student award recipients for their benefactors
  • Prepare custom, professional, and easily digestible reports to donors on the impact of their giving
  • Draft, lead the editing process, and publish short stories on donors and alumni
  • Prepare and disseminate regular fundraising activity reports to faculty and staff
  • Draft donor acknowledgement letters
  • Assist with logistical preparations and attend Development cultivation events (e.g. Giving Day, Gymkana Home Show, Dean's Recognition Ceremony)
  • Manage event registrations in the AlumnIQ system
  • Lead and execute the promotion strategy for Development-related news and events, in collaboration with the SPH Communications team
  • Provide and edit content for the SPH Alumni Insider newsletter
  • Conduct daily administrative tasks (i.e., copying, filing, mailing, e-mailing, data entry, etc.), including entering donor contact reports into the confidential Blackbaud Fundraiser Performance Management donor database
  • Attend occasional Development & Alumni Network evening / weekend events
  • Support Development team on school-wide events / projects
  • Prepare confidential briefings for donor visits and events
  • Maintain updated Development content on the SPH website
  • Conduct prospect and donor research
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications :

Education :

This posting is only open to master's students who are currently enrolled at the University of Maryland College Park for the 2025-2026 school year.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Outstanding writing skills
  • Experience in managing multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously
  • Prior upper-level coursework in English writing, management, and / or communications
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and oral communication skills
  • Strong commitment to accurate, high-quality storytelling
  • Able to work independently, as well as a member of a team
  • Detail-oriented, disciplined, and trustworthy. Able to handle all confidential donor related tasks / duties appropriately
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Conditions of Employment :

  • Interested in philanthropy, fundraising, and the nonprofit sector
  • Able to commit 20 hours per week across at least three weekdays and attend occasional evening / weekends as needed. A maximum of 8 hours per week of virtual work is permitted.
  • Willing to commit to working from at least July 7, 2025 through May 20, 2026.
  • Preferences :

  • Pursuing a degree in public health, journalism, business, communications, design, or nonprofit management
  • Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office Applications, Google Applications, Asana, AlumnIQ, Canva
  • Knowledge of and / or passion for the field of public health

  • This is a level 2, 12-month GA position with a yearly salary of $36,555 per Graduate School guidelines, plus fringe [health benefits] and tuition remission (up to 10 credits / semester if full-time student).
