Certified Medication Aide
BASIC FUNCTION
Responsible for administrating medication and treatments in accordance with current, applicable federal, state, local and company standards.
CHARACTERISTIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1.
Prepares and administers oral medication, nasal, eye, ear and topical medications, according to the policies and procedures of LH.
2.
Documents administration on the Medication Administration Record immediately after administering the medication.
3.
Notified licensed nurse of any medication not administered and documents per policy.
4.
Notified licensed nurse for assessment prior to administration of P.R.N. Medications.
5.
Completes intake and output form for any liquids as applicable.
6.
Adheres to aseptic technique, washes hands after any patient contact.
7.
Maintains Medication Cart in a clean and orderly fashion and checks for outdated medication.
8.
Stocks medication cart with juice, cups, straws and other necessary supplies.
9.
Maintains PDR or nursing drug reference book on the medication cart.
10.
Takes apical pulse with cardiac medications, blood pressure with antihypertensive and follows other special medication protocols.
11.
Adheres to administration times and guidelines for one hour before and one hour after prescribed time.
12.
Is knowledgeable of all medications administered, including side effects. Adheres to the five (5) rights of medication administration.

13.
Administers treatment within scope of practice and as delegated by the Charge Nurse.
14.
Identifies patient prior to administering medication or treatment.
15.
Maintains security of the medication cart (i.e., locked when not in sight).
16.
Positions cart at patient’s door, within sight. Does not take cart into patient’s room.
17.
Intervenes in a safety hazard or potential safety hazard.
18.
Observes patient’s needs while giving medication and notifies CNAs to intervene, assist, provide care, etc.
19.
Adheres to patient’s rights policy.
20.
Maintains isolation procedures when applicable.
21.
Performs patient care duties as delegated by the Charge Nurse.
22.
Adheres to facility policies and procedures.
23.
Participates in the quality assessment and improvement process and activities.
24.
Maintains confidentiality of patient information and medication administration records.
25.
Is responsible for participation in the training program on the facility immunization program and in the annual vaccination campaign.
EXPOSURE RISK
The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) is at high risk for exposure to blood and body fluids or other potentially infectious materials.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The CMA receives administrative supervision from the Director of Nursing, clinical supervision form the Charge Nurse or shift Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The CMA exercises some functional supervision of CNAs as delegated by the Charge Nurse.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1.
High School Graduate preferred.
2.
State approved certificate for administering medications.
3.
Current Certified Nursing Assistant certificate.
4.
Prefer one year of experience but will train qualified candidates.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1.
Works in the nursing service area, patient rooms, nurse’s station, etc.
2.
Sits, bend, stands, lifts, and move intermittently throughout the work hours.
3.
May be expose to infectious waste, diseases, conditions and blood and body fluids.
4.
Subject to frequent interruptions.
5.
Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
6.
Communicates with other nursing and departmental personnel.
7.
Is involved with patients, personnel, visitors, etc., throughout the working hours.
8.
Is willing to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
9.
Subject to burns form equipment, falls, odors, etc. throughout the workday.
10.
Must be economical and careful with supplies, equipment, etc.
11.
Must follow all established policies and procedures to include nursing care procedures, safety regulations, personnel policies, etc., to assure that quality patient care can be maintained.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
1.
Must possess a sincere desire to serve the ill, aged and infirmed.
2.
Must be able to read, write and understand the English language at 8
th
grade level.
3.
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when necessary.
4.
Must be able to relate information concerning a patient condition.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENT
(With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices)
1.
Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
2.
Must be able to speak the English Language in an understandable manner.
3.
Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
4.
Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable the senses to function adequately read measurements on patient related equipment such as thermometers, monitors, gauges).
5.
Must be able to function independently, have personal integrity, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively with patients, personnel and support agencies.
6.
Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
7.
Must be able to relate and work with the disabled, ill, elderly, emotionally upset and at times hostile people within the facility.
8.
Must be to lift, push, pull, and move a minimum of 50 pounds.
9.
Must be able to assist with the evacuation of patients.
