Motor Vehicle Operator
The John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, MI is recruiting for a Motor Vehicle Operator. The incumbent operates patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans / buses and other types transport vehicles, capable of carrying up to 8 or more passengers, to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other private sector areas like patient homes, railway, bus stations and airports.
Responsibilities include :
- Driving one or more types of patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans / buses, and other types of transport vehicles.
- Driving to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, patient homes, railway / bus stations, and airports.
- Driving predetermined and / or scheduled routes or special runs.
- Arriving at and departing from pick-up and discharge points at scheduled times.
- Operating the doors to allow passengers to enter and leave the vehicle.
- Reading installation maps and judging road / traffic conditions to determine the shortest, safest route.
- Providing friendly, polite, and courteous service.
- Enforcing passenger safety and seatbelt use.
- Checking ID cards to ensure authorization of passengers as required.
- Driving vehicles over roads and streets through various types of traffic and possible weather conditions.
- Safely transporting patients to minimize disruption and ensure maximum comfort during travel.
- Abiding by rules, laws, and traffic regulations pertaining to ambulances.
- Able to load and unload patients safely when transporting.
- Making trips to homes, railway / bus stations, and airports.
- Picking up from private homes, nursing homes, hospitals, doctors' offices, and in some cases housing / employment areas in a timely, courteous manner.
- Using multiple variations of Mobile Data Computer (MDC) in and out of vehicles for assigned trips and duties daily.
- Dealing with patients, families of patients, charge nurses, doctors, and other medical staff professionally and courteously.
- May transfer neurotic patients with / without assistance depending on patient's condition.
- Loading and unloading patients, medical supplies, and may perform other duties as assigned.
- Operating different types of vehicles as assigned and needed to transport patients.
- Examples include stretcher van, 1-ton wheelchair van, passenger van, large passenger bus, ambulance, Dual Use Vehicles.
- Required to pick up and deliver patients mainly throughout the Catchment area as assigned by the Mobility Manager.
- Vehicles will range from 8,900 GVW to over 22,000 GVW with wheelchair lift.
- Follow all applicable and current laws, regulations, VA directives, policies, etc.
- Perform operator maintenance such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing vehicles, and performing inspection checklists for safe / proper operation.
- Maintain records and document actions : Use operator inspection checklists / forms and accident / incident reports.
- Use two-way radio (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher / supervisor on assignments and locations, IAW FCC rules / regulations.
- Utilize safety practices and procedures, follow established safety rules / regulations, and maintain a safe / clean work environment.
- Ensure proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.
