Emergency Dispatcher
Employees in this class work under general supervision and, within a framework of established procedures, are expected to perform duties which involve receiving incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for fire and medical assistance and dispatching necessary units using a computer aided dispatch (CAD) system and 800 Mhz radio system.
The following are duties considered essential for this job classification.
- Receives 9-1-1 emergency and non emergency requests for fire protection, medical aid, or patrol related services.
- Obtains necessary and relevant information from a reporting party and inputs same into the CAD system for processing of the call.
- Evaluates and prioritizes calls for services and dispatches appropriate personnel and equipment.
- Using a computer aided dispatch (CAD) system, monitors and updates fire, ambulance, and patrol unit location and status in order to coordinate emergency field operations.
- Using the RCS 800 Mhz radio system, monitors several fire command and patrol channels, transmits vital response and scene information to field units, and processes field requests for resources or information.
- Maintains and updates reference books and CAD logs in the Communications Center and performs other clerical duties as assigned.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge would be :
Graduation from High School or equivalent.One year of experience performing public safety dispatch duties OR one year of general clerical work involving extensive public contact over the phone or in person.A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standards listed above.Knowledge of :
Methods of handling difficult public contacts.Standard radio and multi-line telephone communications receiving and transmitting equipment.Standard Windows-based computer systems.Ability to :
Communicate verbally and in writing as well as to speak clearly and concisely over the radio and telephone.Hear, understand, and speak the English language.Respond to calls quickly and calmly and make sound decisions in emergency situations.Retain and relay information received under stressful conditions.Communicate with people of diverse social and cultural backgrounds.Understand and follow written and oral instructions.Calmly relay written pre-arrival medical instructions to difficult / hysterical callers.Exercise independent judgment and work with a minimum of supervision.Establish and maintain working relationships with other agencies.Operate a computer keyboard at a speed necessary for proficient job performance.Learn geographic features and streets in the JPA communities.Comprehend and make inferences from written material.Read, interpret, and give directions from maps and / or computer GIS mapping.Handle simultaneous events effectively.Learn Fire Department, Medical, and Patrol terminology and jurisdictional boundaries and available types of emergency services.Understand and interpret rules, regulations, policies and procedures.Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation including physical and psychological examinations.
