JOB SUMMARY :
Performs specialized work safeguarding the wellbeing of the public at the aquatics facilities for the Village of Wellington (Village). Position is responsible for providing courteous and professional assistance to all patrons, maintaining the highest standards of customer service for all groups and rendering lifesaving procedures, if needed.
Work is performed under close supervision with minimal latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Maintains visual surveillance of aquatics facility patrons, fellow staff members, and Village employees based on set standards.
Ensures adherence to aquatics facilities established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines for both the public and staff.
Performs emergency water rescue duties to assist individuals in distress; applies rescue breathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques where necessary; administers first aid.
Maintains all rescue and first aid equipment in proper operating condition at all times.
Maintains general safety, cleanliness, and appearance of assigned amenities including all pool areas, restrooms, showers, concession areas, pool office and outer perimeter of facility grounds, when able to do so without distraction from lifeguard monitoring duties.
Performs general cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, dusting, pool brushing, trash removal, etc. daily.
Participates in community events by providing first aid as needed.
Explains and interprets public safety rules and regulations, fees and charges, and aquatic operational procedures and programs to pool patrons, to deliver a high degree of customer service to all patrons and user groups; enforces or refers enforcement to appropriate authorities.
May teach swimming or implement any required aquatic programs as necessary.
Participates in in-service training / certification programs to maintain current certifications in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance standards.
Supervisory Responsibilities :

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
High school diploma or GED preferred; or currently enrolled in high school; supplemented by one (1) year of experience as a lifeguard preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and / or experience.
Certifications and Licenses :
Valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate preferred
Water Safety Instructor or Lifeguard Instructor Trainer certification or recognized equivalents desired.
Regular attendance at work on-site is essential to maintain the necessary teamwork, personal interaction, and supervision that this position requires. Responds to emergency call-ins for hurricanes or other critical events.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Knowledge of technical procedures and systems such as water rescue duties to include rescue breathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR / PR) techniques
Knowledge of first aid administration
Ability to swim 500 yards continuously Swim 500 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Under 10 mins.
Ability to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
Ability to complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Ability to swim 20 yards starting in the water with the face in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
Ability to surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object; ability to return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object, keeping the face at or near the surface to get a breath of air (candidates should not swim the distance underwater); then exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Ability to maintain composure under stress
Skill in basic math including but not limited to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometric construction, practical algebra and metrics
Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing
Ability to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing) with residents, coworkers, supervisors, administration, and vendors
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and / or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds). May require Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and / or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. May require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling of heavier objects when performing lifeguard tasks.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS :
Tasks are regularly performed outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and / or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery and / or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals / wildlife, toxic / poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence and / or disease, or pathogenic substances.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS :
Tasks require sound and visual perception and discrimination. Tasks require oral communications ability. Must have manual dexterity and be able to perform repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, or fingers. Must be able to perceive color and depth. Tasks involve prolonged eye use and / or fine visual ability; computer work, reading text, visual inspections, or measurement devices. Must be able to follow visual cues or signals.
