Job Description

The role of the HSE Coordinator is to provide support and service for our Butler-Cohen personnel and BC Projects. The HSE Coordinator ensures that the whole construction workforce is safe by verifying programs, procedures, standards and safe plans are reviewed and in place on every project they are assigned to.

HSE Coordinator will provide professional expertise, advice, and guidance relating to personnel safety and health issues in the office and on site. This includes all phases of building construction operations, including site development, excavation, foundation, superstructure, exterior walls, mechanical systems, electrical, and interior finish work.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities

  • Mentor & Training

HSEC will provide mentorship to site project personnel to comply with state and federal guidelines throughout different phases and duration of the project.

  • HSEC will coordinate training needs for Butler-Cohen project personnel as needed.
  • Provide support in safety meetings, toolbox talks when needed, orientations, safety lessons learned, OSHA standards interpretations and standards.

  • Provide feedback to senior leadership with trends, observations, audits, inspections and investigations.
  • Serve as a competent person and mentor to the Butler-Cohen project personnel team.
  • HSEC Responsibilities
  • Manage critical safety tasks through the Safetymint platform.

  • Review safety work related to Butler Cohen's Focus Six, which includes high-risk activities such as lifting operations, hot work, and working at heights.
  • Assist in creating safety plans to ensure critical work is executed safely, while coordinating closely with owners, clients, and subcontractors by addressing site logistics, such as traffic relocation or rerouting, to ensure the safety of workers and the surrounding public.
  • Collaborate remotely on multiple projects through Teams with site leadership and subcontractors and assist with drafting safety plans (permits) for the project.
  • Participate in weekly pull planning meetings with multiple sites to forecast upcoming work phases by collaborating and supporting all project personnel with preparations for forthcoming tasks well in advance, ensuring all safety protocols are in place as the project progresses through its various phases. Consult with subcontractors to review and improve their JHAs.
  • Regularly lead training sessions for project personnel to ensure everyone is proficient in hazard identification and safety documentation.
  • Verify subcontractors have plans and implement safe programs to educate and train employees on workplace safety practices, fire prevention, and correct handling of chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials.
  • Ensure safe operation of mobile equipment standards are followed and in place.
  • Conduct periodic safety inspections on all job sites to ensure safety procedures are in place based on Butler-Cohen safety standards.
  • Perform and oversee the investigation of accidents, injuries, and unsafe working conditions including interfacing with workers’ compensation claims.
  • Communicate with injured workers, plan return-to-work strategies with subcontractor leadership, and ensure that all injuries have case management. Conduct and document audits for field staff, plans, and procedures through SAFETYMINT.
  • Use Focus 6 to initiate, verify and approve workplans for critical work for the project on a daily and weekly basis.
  • Represent Butler-Cohen’s Ambassador and assist in business development during each project visit, when interacting with customers and potential clients, at conferences, and at all business events.
  • Education / Experience Required

  • An Occupational Safety Degree, 2-year Associate of Arts or Technical Degree is highly desirable.
  • 1 to 3 years’ safety experience in an industrial, distribution or construction environment.
  • OSHA 10 and 30-hour certification and OSHA OTI Certification are added advantages.
  • OSHA General Industry Certification : CPR and First Aid Certifications required.
  • Must be working toward Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist
  • Awareness of OSHA regulations standards and interpretation, hazard identification and corrections, environmental regulations.
  • Effective communication, generate professionally written material, and deliver effective verbal presentations.
  • Skills / Abilities Required

  • Adept at Microsoft Office and safety related electronic platforms for reporting and tracking.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong listening skills to be able to get valuable information from employees.
  • Good organizational and record-keeping abilities.
  • Ability to climb heights using ladders or scaffolding to access and evaluate work at heights.
  • Understanding of company project work to inform the design and implementation of effective safety solutions.
  • Collaborator, self-confident, motivated, and ability to work independently.
  • Bilingual (English – Spanish) is preferred.
  • Working Conditions

    This role is performed in a hybrid indoor / outdoor setting on an active commercial construction site and requires a high level of physical mobility and situational awareness.

    Physical Demands :

  • Must be able to walk the site multiple times per day, including uneven surfaces such as sand, gravel, or compacted dirt.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders to access all areas of the jobsite, including roofs, mezzanines, and spaces above ceilings.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, squatting, and standing for extended periods are required to check framing layouts, concrete forms, and detailed fieldwork.
  • Must be capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to work on their feet for most of the workday without the need for extended rest periods.
  • Must be able to visually inspect small details and work elements at close range and at a distance.
  • Must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions and communicate clearly across noisy jobsite environments.
  • Must be physically capable of coordinating in the field with subcontractors, vendors, and inspectors throughout the day.
  • Working Conditions :

  • Work will occur in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Must be comfortable working independently without direct supervision during afternoons, early mornings, or weekends as project needs require.
  • May be exposed to high noise levels, dust, and other airborne particles; appropriate PPE must be worn.
  • Must be able to safely navigate active construction areas, including heavy equipment, scaffolding, and temporary structures.
