School Bus Driver
Under the direction of the Transportation Manager or other assigned administrator, the School Bus Driver operates a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students.
Examples of duties include :
- Driving a school bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and in accordance with regulations and laws related to pupil transportation.
- Transporting students to and from school, special events, and field trips.
- Observing legal and defensive driving practices.
- Picking up and discharging students at established bus stops in a timely manner.
- Escort students across streets.
- Reporting incidents which affect the safety of students as necessary.
- Enforcing and maintaining rules of conduct.
- Reporting cases of misconduct to appropriate personnel.
- Maintaining bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections.
- Transporting students with disabilities to and from designated locations.
- Maintaining records concerning vehicle maintenance, miles driven, and number of children transported.
- Educating students on bus safety procedures.
- Utilizing two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication.
- Performing related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and abilities required include :
Safe driving practices.Provisions of the California State Motor Vehicle code and Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students.Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.Basic record-keeping techniques.Oral and written communication skills.Operating a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules.Maintaining order and discipline among students while driving a school bus.Maintaining assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition.Recognizing equipment malfunctions and taking appropriate action.Learning designated bus routes including stops and traffic hazards.Maintaining routine records.Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others.Being flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possessing sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents, and others.Understanding and following oral and written directions.Meeting schedules and time lines.Observing legal and defensive driving practices.Assisting in loading and unloading handicapped children as necessary.Minimum qualifications include :
Graduation from high school.Possession of a valid California School Bus Driver Certificate (Type 1 Only).Class B driver's license with passenger endorsement.Valid Medical Card, and CPR and First Aid certificates.DMV H6 Driving History Report.
