Job Announcement

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) is a progressive public health leader serving 1.2 million residents from diverse ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds. This position supports an expanding Population Health Section within the Division of Epidemiology and Population Health (DEPH). Established in 2018, the Population Health program has a primary focus on examining health and well-being at the population level, including underlying disparities across demographic and geographic groups; as well as a focus on understanding the mechanisms through which behavioral, structural, economic, social, and cultural factors interact in producing observed health related patterns over the life course. Key to the work of the Population Health program is the application of analytic information in the promotion and implementation of effective cross-sectoral strategies for optimizing health and well-being and reducing health inequities.

This position will support ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and analytic efforts designed to assess and inform local community initiatives, programs, and partnerships; with a primary focus on activities administered through the Division of Community Health Development.

Key capabilities for this position include :

  • Knowledge and experience in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data associated with the evaluation of population trends, patterns, and disparities in health outcomes and determinants;
  • Experience in the use of analytic and qualitative methods for the monitoring and evaluation of public health programs;
  • Experience in the development of primary data collection strategies and tools for assessing public health program outcomes;
  • The ability to effectively translate and present analytic findings to diverse audiences for informing program and policy development and quality improvement efforts;
  • Proficiency in the utilization of software applications for data management, analysis, and visualization; and the
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with organizational and community partners.

The successful candidate will undertake the following key activities :

  • Support the development and implementation of effective program monitoring and evaluation strategies and the identification of program performance and outcome metrics;
  • Contribute to the development of quantitative and qualitative data collection strategies and tools;
  • Program data management and quality assurance;
  • Descriptive and inferential analysis of surveillance and programmatic data;
  • Data translation and presentation for audiences with varying levels of public health expertise;
  • Support collaborative working relationships and capacity building efforts with internal and external partners in the use of data for informing public health initiatives and programs.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelors degree in health education, human services, or a directly related field; plus one year of experience in communicable and / or chronic disease education, investigation or other types of health-related work involving considerable public contact.

    CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED :

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - CPR certification (Required within 30 days of hire)
  • AED certification (Required within 30 days of hire)
  • NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

    The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry check, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

    Additional Work Schedule Requirements : Flexible work schedule will be required to work evening and / or weekend community meetings or events to and / or be on-call.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Knowledge and experience in applying appropriate program monitoring and evaluation strategies in assessing the impact of public health initiatives and programs.
  • Experience in the development of data collection strategies and tools.
  • Experience in data management and quality assurance.
  • Experience in using data to inform public health program development and quality improvement activities.
  • Experience effectively working on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience engaging with multicultural populations and community organizations.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

    Job is generally sedentary in nature, and requires walking, standing, sitting (for long periods of time), and kneeling, reaching, bending, climbing stairs; may be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. as required for the position. Uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer and use of touchscreen. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Generally, works in an office environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. Ability to drive a motor vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
