JOB DUTIES : This position is located in the Skilled Nursing Care, or Long Term Care (LTC), department at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) of the Hawai'i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua'i Region. The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) III independently develops and implements nursing care plans for patients / residents utilizing the medication cart, medication administration and task duties as needed for the daily care of patient / residents; provides nursing care treatment and educational services; may assign and direct the work of lower level registered nurses and nursing assistants; may serve as a charge nurse on an assigned shift; and performs other related duties as assigned. This position will be utilized in this capacity per this facility for patients / residents requiring nursing care in LTC unit, but also in other acute care units. Generally, patients / residents require long-term care when there is a need for minimal to total care of daily living of resident / patients with comfort measures. There is also hospice care periodically in the facility when necessary. This role will primarily be stationed in the LTC unit but will also participate in cross training and may be assigned to different units as needed. The position involves rotating shift work, which may include weekends, holidays, and extended hours. The RPN III position reports to the Director of Nursing - LTC.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE : Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.

EDUCATION : Applicants must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing.

NURSING EXPERIENCE : Six (6) months of professional nursing work experience.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED : Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for one year of nursing experience.

QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE : Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he / she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he / she is being considered.

LICENSE REQUIRED : License to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawaii.

For certain positions, possession of a motor vehicle operator's license is required.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

KNOWLEDGE OF : Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing.

ABILITY TO : Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient's condition and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff and employees.
