Job Summary
Senior Principal Controls Engineer is a known expert who uses professional concepts in developing resolutions to critical issues across design and operational matters. Acts as a subject‑matter expert to engineering and site‑operations groups (e.g., Data Center Engineering). Performs system maintenance and support, leads multi‑site projects, develops and implements policies and procedures, and manages internal and external teams.
Responsibilities
System Operation and Work Practices
- Expert operating knowledge of control systems, including advanced diagnostics and repairs.
- Expert knowledge of SCADA systems, cloud monitoring integrations, and on‑premise and cloud system architecture.
- Apply Equinix processes, procedures, and industry standards to resolve critical issues.
- Work with vendors to identify and resolve hardware and software issues affecting operations.
- Develop complete sequences of operation and control schemes for HVAC, electrical and fuel systems; create reusable SOOs.
- Utilize safe working practices at an expert level (e.g., lockout / tagout, MSDS).
- Evaluate and assure the safety practices of others.
- Review and recommend work practice guidelines and policies.
- Interact with other engineering disciplines and act as lead project engineer for multi‑disciplinary projects.
- Understand requirements of multi‑disciplinary projects, including coordination, arc flash, pump curves, piping loss calculations, equipment maintainability, constructability, EH&S, etc.
Problem Solving
Consistently solve complex, cross‑functional issues requiring independent action and high initiative.Make recommendations for system‑level enhancements to eliminate potential problems.Test suitability of components for regional or enterprise deployment.Troubleshoot complex electrical and mechanical problems not associated with controls.Executive Level Communications
Lead mentoring of junior team members.Direct internal and external project teams.Manage teams for projects such as General Contractors, design teams, commissioning agents, equipment suppliers, etc.Establish and maintain high‑value relationships.Provide executive‑level communication including business requirements documents and advanced technical writing.Communicate operational decisions to customers and conduct post‑incident communications.Develop and deliver executive‑level communications.Technical Expertise
Expert in electrical, fire protection, and HVAC systems design and operation, including advanced optimization strategies.Deep controls system knowledge to rapidly comprehend new systems and influence industry design.Subject‑matter expert to internal and external stakeholders.Extensive knowledge of multiple facets of controls engineering.Develop, execute, and lead multi‑disciplinary projects.Review budget and scope; calculate savings for control system replacement projects.Responsible for budget oversight of regional, multi‑year, and highly complex projects.Lead internal and / or external engineering seminars and conferences.Proficient with electrical, mechanical, fire, safety, security systems, server operating systems, networks, and cybersecurity.Training
Develop training programs for other groups within Equinix.Manage multi‑disciplinary training initiatives.Participate in industry organizations and influence industry opinions.Policy Development
Develop policies and critical procedures with wide scope and large impact.Own global policy documents.Maintain libraries of standardized programming modules, sequences of operations, graphics, and reporting tools.Policy Compliance
Ensure adherence to developed standards through documentation review, commissioning activities, and data center physicals.Produce high‑level reporting and summaries of policy compliance information.Develop KPIs and aggregate data for compliance reporting.Qualifications
15+ years in control system design, operations, maintenance, and project planning with emphasis on controls.Bachelor’s degree preferred.Pay Range
United States – Ashburn Office (AEO) : 195,000 – 293,000 USD / Annual
United States – Dallas Field Office : 177,000 – 265,000 USD / Annual
Canada – Toronto Office (TRO) : 182,000 – 272,000 CAD / Annual
