Commissioning Project Engineer

Willdan Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of Willdan Group Inc., is seeking a motivated Commissioning Project Engineer to support our building commissioning and sustainability consulting services. This position plays a critical role in ensuring reliable facility operations, energy efficiency, and compliance with LEED and agency standards. The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, communicates proactively, and can manage multiple assignments across different locations. The position will be assigned with our NYC office but the responsibilities will be primarily associated with the NYC, Westchester and Hudson Valley region. Willdan has several offices located in these areas and the actual office location would be flexible based on the individual.

We are looking for someone with exceptional communication skills, ability to handle multiple projects at the same time, work independently, communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with managers, team members and clients, and can travel within the tri-state area. This individual will have a bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline and/or equivalent experience to provide the services required for this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct on-site inspections and performance testing of mechanical and HVAC systems.
• Develop and manage commissioning documentation and testing procedures.
• Coordinate with internal teams, clients, and project stakeholders to maintain schedule alignment.
• Provide timely status updates and raise issues proactively to supervisors and project teams.
• Contribute to process improvement initiatives and support technical documentation.
• Maintain clear communication and follow-through on assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
• Travel throughout New York State and the tri-state area as needed.
• Additional duties may be assigned based on evolving project and business needs.

Job Requirements / Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related field).
• At least 3 years of experience in a technical or building systems environment (HVAC operations, commissioning, or similar), beyond graduation.
• Training in HVAC, building systems, or energy-related disciplines is a plus.
• Certifications such as LEED, ACP, CCP (BCxA), or CBCP (AEE) are a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to manage deadlines, prioritize tasks, and communicate effectively.
• Experience managing multiple tasks across multiple projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must clearly report progress and ask questions as needed.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other project management tools.
• Self-motivated with the ability to adapt quickly, multitask, and work both independently and collaboratively.
• Eager to learn about complex systems (e.g., boilers, pumps, controls, BMS).
• Deliver high-quality, professional work products and reports.
• Communicate clearly, consistently, and on time with project teams and clients.
• Comply with company policies and uphold safety, respect, and ethical standards.
• Take ownership of tasks and contribute positively to team dynamics.
• Meet deadlines reliably and escalate obstacles or delays in advance.
