Nature of WorkThe Systems Administrator II is responsible for installing and supporting system software and equipment, monitoring systems performance, maintaining system security and providing technical support services. Systems supported include those located in the city’s data centers and Cloud Computing environments. In this role you will also support various Public Safety technologies, including, trunked radio, citywide surveillance systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, in squad technologies and Fire Apparatus technology. This position reports directly to the Information Technology manager.
CompensationThe 2025 starting pay rate is $88,718-$130,469 based on experience and qualifications.
ScheduleThis role primarily supports our Police and Fire Departments - critical services that operate 24/7 to keep our City safe.
In 2026, the normal schedule will be 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work when urgent situations arise. In 2027, additional support will be required on the weekends and evenings. When additional hours are required to be worked, you can work with your supervisor to flex your time in the pay period.

The City of Rochester will not sponsor or transfer visas for this position including F1 OPT STEM. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Install and support system software and equipment.
- Install and maintain operating and application systems software.
- Ensure that all software is at the current version/release level and performing to specifications.
- Install and maintain equipment designed for in-house setup and support.
- Work with outside vendors assigned to support in-house equipment and software.
* Monitor systems performance.- Measure and tune operating software to ensure the efficient use of equipment resources.
- Provide recommendations for software and equipment upgrades to ensure adequate capacity and throughput levels.
* Maintain system security.
- Perform security functions to ensure that systems and data are protected from unauthorized access and use.
- Establish and maintain effective backup and recovery guidelines.
- Maintain an emergency recovery plan to protect information resources in the event of a catastrophic failure.
- Monitor adherence to standards for application systems, databases, recovery procedures and documentation.
* Provide Technical Support Services.- Provide recommendations for the design and implementation of server/network related software and hardware.
- Troubleshoot and develop solutions to technical processing problems.
- Research and implement methods to improve the performance and utilization of Information Technology resources.
- Provide server/network related technical assistance to personnel in the organization.
- Share after-hours emergency on-call duty with other Information Technology personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree in computer science or closely related field from an accredited four-year college or university AND three (3) years of fulltime Systems Administration employment experience with MS server administration, server architecture & implementation, systems security, and network topology;
OR
An Associate's degree from an accredited computer science program or closely related field AND five (5) years of fulltime Systems Administration employment experience with MS server administration, server architecture & implementation, systems security, and network topology
Licenses and/or Certifications
Valid Driver's License
