Job description

Job Summary

The Director of Nursing provides nursing and administrative duties to the Pre Op, OR and PACU areas. The position is also responsible for directing and coordinating all clinical activities, resources and personnel at Advanced Surgical Center. The Director of Nursing coordinates the facility’s preparation for AAAHC accreditation, OSHA, HCFA, and State rules and regulations. Serves the facility as the specialty resource for the current standards of regulatory agencies that apply. Performs utilization review, performance improvement and staff education. Oversees infection control and employee health. Maintains the survey readiness for facility in between surveys.

Requirements

Position Requirements

Licenses or Certifications : Current licensure to practice in the State of Texas. Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support course; ACLS and CNOR preferred and PALS if applicable.

Education, Vocational Training and Experience : Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing. Bachelor degree required; Master degree preferred. Significant experience in clinical nursing is required. Preferred a minimum of three years supervisory experience in a healthcare related organization. Current experience in ambulatory surgery is required. Materials management experience is preferred. Must have the ability to manage multiple perioperative areas and operations.

Essential Position Requirements

A. Job Knowledge

1. Provides clinical and operational expertise for the ASC

a. Recommends / develops services and programs consistent with and appropriate to the ASC environment

b. Collaborates with physicians, managers and team members to identify innovative programs that will impact on growth, quality and / or efficiency of each facility

c. Assists in the development of annual goals and objectives of the ASC, ensuring the goals are appropriate and mutually beneficial to the ASC

d. Collaborates with nurse managers and clinical personnel to develop goals and objectives specific to nursing but consistent with the direction of the facility

e. Communicates / interprets annual goals and objectives to nursing management and team members to ensure understanding of differing and / or similar goals at the ASC

f. Monitors goals and objectives and program implementation, reporting progress to the Administrator

g. Develops, implements and coordinates physician recruitment and retention plan to ensure growth

2. Collaborates with the Administrator to create, update, interpret and enforce personnel policies and procedures

a. Collaborates with nursing managers and team members to develop operating room and recovery room standards of care, job descriptions, performance standards, orientation programs, continuing education programs and evaluation tools

b. Provides for continuing education, assuring accurate record keeping for personnel files, state licensing and accreditation surveys

c. Monitors and evaluates the performance of staff members against established performance standards and professional goals

d. Reviews all performance evaluations of the operating room and post-anesthesia care unit staff

e. Develops, implements and evaluates nurse recruitment and retention program that reflects the staffing needs of the ASC

f. Hires, disciplines, evaluates and terminates staff members as appropriate

g. Develops policies, procedures and positions to efficiently coordinate personnel in the ASC

3. Collaborates with the Administrator in the development of the clinical budgets for the ASC, monitoring expenses and reporting of variances

a. Develops, implements and evaluates cost-control policies and procedures, and employs corrective action plans for cost-control problems

b. Monitors the equipment, supply, pharmaceutical and clinical staffing expenses, investigates and reports variances to the Administrator and takes corrective action

c. Evaluates on an ongoing basis the efficiency of coordinating personnel and equipment

d. Assists with the capital equipment budgets, based on program needs, working with medical staff to access needs and maximize benefit of equipment

4. Demonstrates leadership ability and exceptional professional behavior while conducting daily responsibilities

a. Serve as a resource to staff members for administrative policies and procedures

b. Ensures physician complains within established credentialing parameters

c. Assists with physician and staff satisfaction on a quarterly basis, reporting results to Administrator

d. Fosters and enforces empowerment and accountability among staff members to increase employee satisfaction and enable optimum efficiency of operations

e. Provides and maintains positive public relations with all customers to create beneficial affiliations for the ASC

f. Develops, implements and evaluates systems to maintain clear communications and efficient operations between clinical and non-clinical areas

5. Develops thorough collaboration with the nursing team, all clinical policies and programs for the ASC

a. Develops, directs and participates in the Performance Improvement, Risk Management, Safety, Injury Illness Prevention and Infection Control programs, and ensures orientation, staff training and documentation of these programs

b. Attends and directs facility staff meetings, nursing management meetings, safety meetings and Quality Control meetings as appropriate

c. Assures that all clinical policies and procedures are consistent with accepted nursing standards of practice, facility standards, state and Medicare regulatory requirements, accrediting body guidelines

d. Monitors programs and standards of care to ensure that standards are equally applied and maintained at the ASC

e. Interprets and enforces clinical policies and procedures as necessary for Nurse Managers, Charge Nurses and nursing team

f. Ensures the ASC adheres to all facility administrative policies and procedures

B. Productivity

1. Maintains and evaluates own clinical expertise and surgical ASC clinical practice

a. Participates in a yearly self-evaluation, if applicable

b. Attends and conducts staff meetings and completes minutes for meetings

2. Demonstrates the importance of continuing education and growth in profession

a. Maintains and displays appropriate knowledge of professional developments through printed material or other sources

b. Attends professional training seminars when appropriate for job development and shares information with other staff members

c. Attends and participates in all applicable surgical ASC training and development workshops scheduled by the facility

3. Maintains dress and appearance according to standards as observed by management

4. Regularly maintains work area, equipment and supplies in a pristine manner

C. Compliance

1. Adheres to RRSC Standards of Business Conduct

2. Demonstrates the safe operation of equipment and machinery, and follows procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation

3. Attends 100% of required safety training, or reviews make-up materials within two week

D. Service Satisfaction

1. Communicates patient information to assure confidentiality and continuity of care

a. Documents all patient information according to established standards of care, policies and procedures

b. Provides pertinent patient information to the physician, family and staff members

c. Discusses patient information with other health team members in an appropriate environment

d. Documents patient’s / significant other’s response to teaching interventions

2. Interacts with all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional ASC environment

a. Displays a caring and responsive attitude and conducts all activities respecting patient, family and employee rights and expectations

b. Maintains confidentiality of all facility and patient information as required by facility policy

c. Fosters a positive and professional ASC environment by interacting with all persons in a considerate, helpful and courteous manner and by participating as a team member

d. Diffuses / resolves conflict by appropriately communicating with those involved

e. Accepts constructive criticism and gives suggestions in a professional manner

f. Considers age-specific needs in communication

g. Has attended and put into practice the principles of service satisfaction

Qualifications :

  • Current Registered Nurse license to practice in the State of Texas.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification
  • CNOR preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Surgical nursing and operating room experience required.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience in healthcare related organization preferred.

  • Must be able to bend, stoop and stretch
  • Must be able to move stretchers and other medical equipment.
