Overview
Paralegal — Endangered Species and Carnivore Conservation program. Reports to Legal and Program Directors. Location : Portland, Oregon and / or Oregon preferred; remote-work applicants considered from other locations. This is a full-time position; hourly non-exempt with eligibility for overtime. The position is within the Bargaining Unit for which some fees may apply depending on location.

Essential Responsibilities
- Prepare legal documents, check citations, format tables of contents and authorities for briefs, proofread, and ensure compliance with court rules in various federal jurisdictions.
- File documents using PACER / ECF across multiple federal jurisdictions.
- Serve legal documents by certified mail, prepare copies, communicate with vendors and Clerks' offices, and related tasks.
- Maintain litigation-tracking databases and calendar management for court filings, administrative actions, and deadlines.
- Prepare and index administrative records and appendices / excerpts in litigation.
- Prepare billing spreadsheets.
- Conduct factual and legal research and document review; assist attorneys with discovery review, organization, and summarization; retrieve documents from PACER and other databases.
- Finalize and submit petitions and comment letters, including online references.
- Maintain legal library and update court rules and reference materials.
- Maintain electronic databases and systems for filings, program campaigns, and program management.
- Provide general administrative and clerical support for the program as needed.
- Assist with preparation for events such as public presentations, rallies, and hearings.
- Handle and track payments for expenses (filing fees, bar dues, CLE registration) and submit monthly expense reports to Accounting.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Senior Level Duties
Perform at a high professional level; conduct substantive research and analysis to further litigation, policy advocacy, grassroots organizing, and media outreach.Occasionally draft legal filings.Essential Qualifications and Skills
Paralegal / litigation experience : Associate 0-2 years; Staff 2+ years; Senior 8+ years.Paralegal certification preferred.Knowledge of Bluebook and / or ALWD; familiarity with Redbook or similar legal style manual preferred.Experience with legal technology and case management software preferred (e.g., MyCase, RocketMatter, Clio, CaseMap).Ability and willingness to perform legal secretarial and general administrative tasks.Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills; strong attention to detail and organizational skills.Proven ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks within a diverse team.Strong work ethic, problem-solving skills, and ability to learn new tasks quickly.Understanding of court and administrative dockets, rules and regulations, particularly Federal District Courts.Commitment to the Center's JEDAI principles and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Pro; willingness to learn new software. Experience with Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, and Zoom preferred; Lexis / Westlaw experience preferred.Demonstrated commitment to environmental protection preferred.Location & Working Conditions
Portland, Oregon and / or Oregon preferred but not required. Remote possible but infrequent travel may be required. Typical office hours Monday–Friday with some night and weekend work due to deadlines. Occasional travel and standard office environment.
