This is a teaching hospital with a Level 1 trauma designation. The nursing unit includes a range of inpatient MedSurg and telemetry patients. The patient ratio is 1 : 4-6 for RNs and LPNs, while CNAs can handle up to 1 : 14. Common diagnoses involve both MedSurg and telemetry patients. Required skills include trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts, and glucometer usage. Familiarity with common IV drips such as insulin and heparin is essential. A CNA will assist with vitals, blood glucose checks, bathing, and patient safety. Unit secretaries are available from 7a to 11p, with coverage through a house-wide call secretary overnight. Charge nurses are present during all shifts. Phlebotomy is typically performed by lab technicians, though RNs may draw from central venous lines. There is a PICC team available for consultations. Resource nurses are on hand, as well as discharge nurses to assist in patient transitions. Respiratory therapy is provided 24 / 7, as well as hospitalist and intensivist services. The electronic medical record system used is EPIC. IV pumps are available, and medication dispensing is managed through Pyxis. Vital sign monitors and glucose stat strips are utilized on the unit. Travelers may be required to float to all MedSurg / Telemetry units as needed. The unit culture is described as busy and team-oriented. Scrub colors for RNs are navy, while LPNs wear ceil blue.
