Here’s a gig with some heft to it, just about as meat-and-potatoes as they come: One of our favorite clients, a prestigious medical facility known for keeping its talent happy, is on the lookout for a senior systems engineer to manage the enterprise’s entire Linux/Unix server infrastructure. This is big-time, high-level, supremely important work for an employer that’s in the business of saving and improving lives. It’s a gem of a gig for a seasoned IT architect looking for something deeply engaging that’s going to make a positive difference in the world.

Nitty Gritty

If you’re still reading, you likely have a decent understanding of the contours of this work: design, configuration, implementation and maintenance of the facility’s Linux systems, including application integration, architecture, engineering and 24/7 support. Producing new engineering solutions. Maintenance-related systems-admin functions. Standardizing and automating said systems (Driving automation will in fact be a big part of your job). Supporting the development of new applications, complete with patches, packages, permissions and the like. Disaster recovery/business continuity procedures. Deployments. Upgrades. Helping manage the virtualization environment.

But to put a little more meat on those bones: You’ll do your work in an ultra-supportive, relaxed environment as part of a close-knit team that likes to have fun while performing at the highest echelon. You’ll have loads of tech to play with, some of the really cutting-edge stuff that you’d likely associate with a top-notch research institution — as but one example, how does a neural network grab you, one built to recognize cancer in screening technologies? All this stuff needs to be built and integrated, and you’ll be given plenty of autonomy to engineer and maintain it.

You’ve put your computer science or engineering degree to good use over the past four years in increasingly senior roles doing engineering or support of UNIX/Linux (Red Hat/Ubuntu) systems for large, complex systems — hopefully systems that support computing technologies used by researchers, especially the medical kind. You’ve had plenty of successful experience with advanced configurations such as high availability, clusters, virtualization and performance tuning. While we’re waxing technical, here’s some more of what you’ve done and what you know: Perl, Python, PHP, Bash, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, CFEngine, Red Hat Satellite, Git, Mercurial; linking Linux systems to TCP/IP networks and to enterprise storage; understanding appropriate use cases for SAN and NAS; and your basic networking/internet technologies: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP and so on and so forth.

You take the support end of things with a deadly seriousness, lives are at stake here. That earnestness comes from a part of your personality that’s also the source of your rigorous analytical approach to solving problems. You’re agnostic as to working independently or as part of a team — each has its advantages, and you’re amenable to both. But you thrive on being part of a team that constantly strives for excellence, peopled by folks who are as devoted to the work as you are.
