Genesis10 is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer (Python) for a 3+ month contract position with a leading digital commerce organization located in Chicago, IL. Summary : We are looking for a senior backend-focused engineer with strong product engineering experience to accelerate delivery across multiple initiatives within a Headless Commerce ecosystem. This role focuses on improving reliability, performance, and developer productivity across distributed microservices and infrastructure. The ideal candidate is a pragmatic problem solver who thrives on driving technical improvements in both code and operations. Responsibilities : Enhance backend reliability, performance, and maintainability through code modernization, async optimization, and infrastructure cleanup. Work closely with product engineering teams to diagnose and resolve production issues, complete service migrations, and strengthen observability. Remediate and optimize CI / CD pipelines (Google Cloud Build, GitHub Actions, or Bitbucket Pipelines preferred). Improve build automation, service integration, and deployment reliability. Contribute to environment setup, infrastructure migrations, and operational cleanup efforts. Implement data and security improvements, such as handling PII properly, rotating API keys, and removing unused data fields. Strengthen monitoring, alerting, and overall developer workflow efficiency. Qualifications : Strong backend development experience in Python, including building, testing, and deploying distributed systems and APIs. Proven ability to diagnose performance bottlenecks, optimize async patterns, and manage microservice integrations. Product engineering mindset — understands the full lifecycle from design to production support with a focus on maintainability and business value. Hands-on experience with CI / CD pipelines (Google Cloud Build, GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines). Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services such as Cloud Functions, Pub / Sub, and Secret Manager (GSM). Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, Google Deployment Manager, etc.) is preferred but not required. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills. Prior experience contributing to production-grade Python services at scale is essential. Desired Outcomes : Improved async performance and scalability across backend services.
