Location : Candidate must be able to work onsite in Aspen, Colorado (or as directed by manager).

Pay Range : Hiring / starting pay range is $26.84 - $32.21 / hourly, based on experience.

Position Purpose :

Performs routine and minor repairs and preventative maintenance on RFTA buses and automotive equipment not only with conventionally fueled vehicles, but also with very specialized alternative fueled vehicles including Biofuels, Compressed Natural Gas and Battery Electric vehicles. This includes removing, repairing, and replacing parts and components as necessary, while using tools and equipment in a safe and professional manner. Provides varied support to the Operations Department.

Performs routine and minor collision repairs and accident damage on RFTA buses and automotive equipment. Prepares and paints vehicles parts and special equipment; applies decals, graphics and signage needed on both the exterior and interior of Authority's vehicles.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities :

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive.

  • Operates vehicles while in strict compliance with RFTA policies, directives, and procedures and all Federal and Colorado traffic laws and regulations.
  • Performs routine maintenance and general repairs on transit equipment and support vehicles, primarily focusing on tire replacement, brakes, minor repairs and adjustments, replacement of body panels, and seasonal equipment switchover.
  • Regularly inspects vehicles as scheduled (e.g. State of good repair, Safety and DOT inspections), identifies defects and makes repairs as needed. Performs regular preventative maintenance on RFTA vehicles. Including preventative maintenance of non-high voltage systems on Battery Electric and Hybrid vehicles.
  • Troubleshoots vehicle systems on a limited basis, accurately identifying causes of maintenance problems. Recommends and performs subsequent repairs.
  • Assists in the maintenance of vehicles utilizing alternative propulsion technologies and fuels including Battery Electric Buses (BEB), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Hybrid, and Biodiesel technologies.
  • Ensures proper vehicle assignments are made while vehicle needs are being met.
  • Responds to road calls, service calls and operates service trucks. Provides support to the Operations Department for vehicle exchanges, vehicle repairs or vehicle recovery as needed. .
  • Documents all actions taken in a professional manner in written and / or electronic format. Completes all necessary forms (e.g., repair orders, service truck logs, warranty information, etc.).
  • Seasonally inspects vehicles as scheduled, identifying defects and making repairs as needed.
  • May assist in providing limited training and direction to other mechanics.
  • Actively and continuously improves professional knowledge, skills, and abilities by participating in routine training sessions and educational seminars relevant to position and job duties.
  • Meets attendance / participation standards for routine safety meetings and training sessions.
  • Completes assigned safety and compliance training in RFTA sponsored Learning Management Software (Travitor) on a timely basis. Incomplete training required for position will adversely affect annual performance review. This includes all RFTA required training programs.
  • Responsible for maintaining work area in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Provides support for the Operations Department (e.g., bus pullout, vehicle exchanges, vehicle recovery, snow plowing, and sanding), and performs related duties as assigned.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs alternative fueled vehicles including biofuels and hybrid propulsion systems.
  • Occasionally assists or serves as a fill in as a Service Worker when needed.
  • Assists Risk Management personnel with the development of damage estimates for RFTA vehicles involved in accidents. Also will work with outside claim adjusters when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience :

  • Advanced computer skills and data entry ability
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others and abide by department code of conduct
  • Solid knowledge of operating theory, failure diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance practices common to buses and heavy vehicles
  • Solid skills with common mechanic hand tools, pneumatic tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Solid knowledge of NFPA 70E Electrical Safety, OSHA and safe working practices and procedures.
  • Solid ability to use prudent judgment and problem-solving skills to make reasonable and appropriate decisions and recommendations
  • Solid ability to read, understand, and use maintenance, repair, parts, schematics and ladder logic manuals in both printed and electronic format; computer-based maintenance information systems, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, service updates and troubleshooting guides.
  • Solid ability to communicate effectively with other employees, the general public, emergency response personnel, law enforcement personnel, and State and Federal regulatory personnel
  • Proficient ability to identify differences in high voltage and low voltage systems on Battery Electric and Hybrid vehicles
  • Ability to learn and develop necessary skill sets required for maintenance on Battery Electric, CNG, Hybrid, and Biodiesel technologies.
  • Solid decision-making skills (e.g., troubleshooting problems with a defective vehicle, recovery of a wrecked or disabled vehicle).
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, HVAC, diesel engines and transmissions
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and gas welding
  • Basic skills with common mechanic hand tools, pneumatic tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License required.
  • Qualifications : Education

  • High school education or equivalent knowledge to perform job successfully. Training and certifications are necessary to be able to perform role responsibility.
  • Vocational / Technical degree in related field (diesel, automotive, collision refinishing, etc.) preferred.
  • License & Certification Requirements- must possess and maintain

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License and be able to obtain a Colorado State Commercial Driver's License with a B-P2 rating within two (2) weeks of beginning employment.
  • If employee possesses an out of state driver's license they must provide Colorado license within 90 days of hire.

  • Valid / current DOT Physical Exam Certificate
  • Air Conditioning Section 609 Refrigerant Certification
  • Underground Storage Tank (UST) Certification (Class C)
  • RFTA Forklift Certification
  • CDOT Annual Inspections Certification (Must possess and maintain within 2 years of employment.)
  • CDOT Brake Inspector's Certification (Must possess and maintain within 2 years of employment.)
  • CNG Fuel Certification
  • Experience

  • Two (2) years of actual experience or a combination of formal training and experience is required.
  • Working Conditions :

    Position requires extremely strenuous physical work involving objects in excess of 100 pounds occasionally and / or in excess of 50 pounds frequently. Works in conditions where up to 650 volts DC and up to 480 volts 3 phase AC is present. Works in a typical automotive / industrial environment. Encounters exposure to moving equipment and vehicles, and related fumes and chemicals. Works in all weather conditions, at varied shifts and on roadways in the event of a breakdown or accident. Responds to serious accidents. Comes in contact with bodily fluids on a regular basis. Works on a regular basis with hazardous and toxic materials (e.g., toxic paints, thinner and other body work supplies) strictly adhering to all safety rules and regulations pertaining to their use, storage, and proper disposal. Personal Protective Equipment provided.

    RFTA Vehicle Maintenance Department operates at two locations 24 hrs. / 7 days per week 365 days a year. All employees are expected to work weekends, holidays and any shift as necessary.

    Most shifts are 10 ½ hours with non-traditional staring times; generally, the morning shift (6 : 00 AM), afternoon (2 : 00 PM) or graveyard (10 : 00 PM). There are no conventional Mon-Fri 8-5 shifts.
