Position Overview
The Data Center Engineer will support TIAA's mission-critical data center operations by managing infrastructure, executing lifecycle processes, and ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of all systems. This role is responsible for hands-on support of capacity planning, equipment installation, cabling, asset management, and operational troubleshooting within the data center environment.
Key Responsibilities Data Center Operations & Infrastructure
Design and prepare data center white space, ensuring adequate power, cooling, airflow, and infrastructure layout.
Monitor environmental, security, and equipment systems; respond to alarms and anomalies.
Handle physical movement of equipment, racks, and materials within the facility.
Technical Troubleshooting & Support
Provide IT infrastructure troubleshooting using a systematic, analytical approach.
Manage the full IT asset lifecycle including installation, maintenance, decommissioning, and secure PII handling.
Serve as primary contact for issues related to power, cooling, connectivity, and equipment failures.
Cabling & Hardware Installation
Perform network cabling installation, routing, labeling, and de-installation (fiber & copper).
Manage physical hardware setup in racks, cabinets, and server environments.
Coordinate work with cable vendors and respond to operational work requests via ServiceNow.
Capacity Planning & Documentation
Maintain and update CMDB, elevations, rack layouts, floorplans, and DCIM data.
Develop and maintain CAD templates and design standards for high-density deployments.
Prepare electrical circuit quotes, install circuits, and maintain PDU schedules.
Generate and distribute operational, capacity, and infrastructure reporting.
Collaboration & Vendor Coordination
Work closely with network engineers to understand VLAN and connectivity requirements.
Partner with corporate services, facilities, and MEP vendors to resolve environmental and infrastructure issues.
Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours support as needed.
Innovation & Process Improvements
Research and evaluate new data center technologies and operational enhancements.
Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and best practices across the data center environment.
Required Qualifications
5+ years of experience supporting and installing mission-critical data center infrastructure.
Strong understanding of IT hardware systems, data center design, and operational standards.
Hands-on experience with DCIM tools and CAD software.
Proven ability to troubleshoot IT infrastructure problems.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work cross-functionally.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Teams, SharePoint, and Zoom.
Ability to work in a physically demanding environment (lifting, moving equipment).
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
