Job Posting: Legal Assistant - Community Outreach & Clinics
The Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino (LASSB) is seeking a Legal Assistant - Community Outreach & Clinics to support our legal services and community-based clinic programs. This position plays a key role in expanding access to justice by helping coordinate and staff legal clinics while providing direct legal and administrative support to attorneys and program staff.
About the Position
This role combines traditional legal assistant duties with hands-on community outreach and client-facing work. The Legal Assistant will work in office and clinic settings, interact regularly with the public, and support legal clinics held at community organizations, courts, and partner sites. The position is well-suited for someone who is organized, adaptable, and comfortable working in fast-paced, public-facing environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate, schedule, and staff legal clinics at community-based organizations, courts, and partner agencies
- Conduct in-person outreach to promote legal clinics and services
- Serve as a point of contact for clinic partners and community stakeholders
- Provide on-site administrative and client support during legal clinics
- Conduct client intake and eligibility screening in accordance with program guidelines
- Explain legal processes, court procedures, and forms in clear, plain language (without providing legal advice)
- Assist clients with completing legal forms and assembling required documentation
- Prepare, organize, and maintain legal documents, clinic records, and case files
- Enter and maintain accurate client and case data in case management systems
- Assist attorneys with follow-up tasks after clinics
- Track clinic attendance, outcomes, and required reporting data
- Work collaboratively with attorneys, paralegals, outreach staff, and community partners
- Follow all confidentiality, ethical, and data security requirements
Required Qualifications
- 1-2 years of experience in a legal assistant, legal support, outreach, or legal services role
- Experience working directly with the public in community-based or service-oriented settings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic data entry or case management systems
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (required)
- Experience supporting legal clinics, self-help centers, or public interest law programs
- Familiarity with court forms, filing procedures, and basic legal terminology
- Experience working with low-income, immigrant, or underserved communities
Work Environment and Schedule
- Combination of office-based work and in-person clinic and outreach activities
- Regular local travel to clinics, courts, and partner sites required
- Evening and weekend work may be required based on clinic and program needs
Physical Requirements
- Ability to travel locally and transport clinic materials
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and interact with clients for extended periods during clinics
- Ability to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation
