Position Summary

The Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and administration of the company’s safety, health, and environmental programs. This position works with leadership, employees, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable requirements. The Safety Specialist will also foster a culture of safety through training, engagement, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Compliance & Program Management
  • Develop, implement, and maintain company safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Maintain all required regulatory records and documentation.
  • Safety Training & Communication
  • Coordinate and deliver safety training programs (new hire orientation, refresher training, job-specific safety training).
  • Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and safety communication initiatives.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to supervisors and employees on safe work practices.
  • Audits, Inspections & Reporting
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and hazard assessments.
  • Monitor safety performance metrics and prepare monthly / quarterly reports for leadership.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Incident Investigation & Prevention
  • Lead or assist in investigating accidents, incidents, and near-misses.
  • Identify root causes and recommend corrective and preventive measures.
  • Support Workers’ Compensation claims management and return-to-work programs.
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Support emergency response planning, including fire, chemical, and medical emergency drills.
  • Maintain emergency equipment, evacuation procedures, and first aid readiness.
  • Serve as a resource during emergency events.
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Monitor trends in safety performance to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Recommend and implement initiatives that enhance the company’s safety culture.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to drive safety engagement and accountability.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and industry-specific safety regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including training delivery.
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and influence behavior at all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with safety reporting systems preferred.
  • Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, or related field preferred; equivalent work experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 2–5 years of relevant safety experience in manufacturing, construction, or industrial settings.
  • Safety certifications such as OSHA 30, CSP, ASP, or CHST preferred.
  • Experience with Workers’ Compensation, safety audits, and compliance reporting strongly preferred.
  • Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Primarily office-based with frequent time spent on the production floor or field environment.
  • Exposure to noise, heat, machinery, chemicals, and other occupational hazards.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
  • Ability to stand, walk, and climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift to 25–50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Performance Metrics

  • Reduction in workplace accidents and incident rates (TRIR, DART).
  • Compliance with regulatory requirements and audit results.
  • Completion of required safety training and employee participation rates.
  • Timeliness and effectiveness of incident investigations and corrective actions.
  • Contribution to overall improvement of safety culture and employee engagement.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively after team members, peers, and management of the organization. Fluent in English : Japanese as a second language is helpful.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometric functions.

    REASONING ABILITY - Ability to draw inferences, reach conclusions, arrive at solutions, and make decisions based on available evidence. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
