This position is a full-time tenure track, 10-month classroom teaching assignment in the Health and Safety Science Division. The current teaching load is 15 lecture hour equivalents per semester. Faculty are also responsible for 5 office hours per week and are expected to devote as much time as necessary to perform the professional responsibilities of the position.

Participation in professional activities, curriculum development and campus committees is expected. The teaching assignment may include courses offered in onsite, online and hybrid format, evening, and / or Saturday classes. This position will be reassigned approximately 80% load corresponding to approximately 20 hours per week to carry out the duties of the Nursing Program Director.

The director coordinates and directs all activities in developing, implementing, and managing a nursing program, including its fiscal planning. Responsibilities also include but are not limited to meeting and maintaining program accreditation requirements, systematic review of program effectiveness among didactic, laboratory, and clinical components, student recruitment, committee assignments and serving as a liaison with health care facilities.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Teach 15 lecture hour equivalents per semester in Registered Nursing using various teaching methods including demonstrations and active learning strategies.
  • Maintain 5 office hours per week, including regular posted office hours, which are accessible to students.
  • Responsible for preparation time.
  • The program director administers, leads, coordinates and directs all activities in developing, implementing, and managing a nursing program, including its fiscal planning.
  • Prepare the nursing program budget with faculty input.
  • Administer fiscal resources allocated to the nursing program.
  • Leads and coordinates the faculty meetings; yearly program review; curricular planning, development, and implementation; student learning outcomes : data collection and writing action plans, program learning outcomes, development, assessment, and implementation; evaluation of educational programs; and college governance to advance the college's mission and strategic goals.
  • Participate in faculty professional development and continuing education activities that are designed to maintain and develop currency in the field, pedagogy (for traditional and online teaching and learning), and student support strategies, especially as they relate to student equity initiatives.
  • Maintain records of attendance, census, grades, etc.
  • Provide an environment conducive to effective learning.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Travel between District locations is also expected.

Perform other program director-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Minimum Qualifications :

Per the Board of Registered Nursing and Accreditation Commission of Education in Nursing, and California Code of Regulations Title 16 §1425, the Director must have the following education / experience :

  • A master’s degree in nursing or higher degree from an accredited college or university which includes course work in nursing, education or administration.
  • A current California Registered Nursing (RN) License
  • One (1) years’ experience in nursing education administration in a pre-or-post-licensure registered nursing program, with validated performance of administrative responsibilities consistent with 16 CCR §1420(h) and Sections 1425(a)(2)
  • If a selected candidate meets all other minimum qualifications but does not yet possess the required nursing education administrative experience, the individual may be appointed as Assistant Director for a period of one (1) year.
  • During that time, reassigned time will be adjusted to 5 hours per week to support the development of administrative competency.
  • Upon successful completion of the required administrative experience and with demonstrated performance, the candidate may be transitioned into the full Director role with the associated reassigned time.
  • Two (2) years’ experience teaching in pre- or post-licensure registered nursing programs; and
  • One (1) year’s continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse.

  • Must have one year of full-time experience in acute care (hospital) setting within the last 5 years or must be willing and able to remediate or currently approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing to teach medical-surgical nursing, and one or more of the following : maternity nursing, pediatric nursing, and / or geriatric nursing. In addition, successful candidate(s) may be required to remediate to (become approved to teach) other areas of nursing.
  • Antelope Valley College Equivalency : Equivalency not needed, per division faculty.

    AND a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (Assembly Bill 1725; Education Code 87360).

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS :

    Master’s degree in nursing education or higher

    Professional nursing experience of 5 years or more.
