Senior Cloud Reliability Engineer

Location : Richmond, Virginia

Position Status : Contract

We're seeking a Senior Cloud Reliability Engineer to join a high-impact team focused on building resilient, scalable cloud infrastructure for foundational platforms. This role is ideal for professionals passionate about Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), AWS cloud networking, and automation-first operations.

You'll work within agile squads to implement observability, automate manual processes, and champion reliability practices across multi-service cloud environments. Your contributions will directly enhance system stability, performance, and operational efficiency for mission-critical platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead SRE initiatives across cloud foundational platforms, focusing on AWS networking components (VPC, VPN, GWLB, Transit Gateway)
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and reusable software utilities to eliminate toil and improve platform reliability
  • Implement observability frameworks using logs, metrics, and traces with tools like Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, AWS CloudWatch, and AWS Canary
  • Build and maintain synthetic monitoring (canaries) to proactively assess service health
  • Collaborate with product teams to define and manage SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets
  • Respond to and resolve incidents efficiently, ensuring minimal disruption
  • Use Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform to manage AWS resources
  • Champion secure coding standards and contribute to governance in regulated environments
  • Drive continuous improvement and scalability across cloud services

Required Skills / Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience
  • 5–7 years of experience in full software development lifecycle, including maintenance and support
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in SRE and observability practices
  • 3+ years of experience in cloud networking (routers, firewalls, load balancers, etc.)
  • Strong development experience in Python or GoLang
  • Deep expertise in AWS environments; Azure experience is a plus
  • Familiarity with tools like Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, AWS CloudWatch, AWS Canary, and AWS EventBridge
  • Experience with Agile and Scaled Agile methodologies
  • Background in supporting infrastructure for large-scale, multi-service applications
  • Knowledge of secure coding standards; experience in banking or regulated environments is a plus
  • AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, SysOps Administrator) are highly desirable
