Job Description
The Paramedic is responsible for assessing, treating, and transporting patients to higher-level care facilities or other destinations.
This role involves providing professional care to an assigned patient population or work site while adhering to established standards of care and principles of continuous quality improvement.
Paramedics deliver life support measures to stabilize critically ill or injured patients. This may include managing airways, administering IV therapy and medications, and providing defibrillation.
The position is based in Jackson, AL, but team members are expected to respond to and transport patients throughout the service area.
Essential Functions and Duties
- Safely operate an emergency vehicle
- Assess the safety and hazards at the scene of an emergency
- Control the hazards at an emergency scene as trained and directed
- Determine the nature and extent of illness or injury present and establishes the priorities for emergency care.
- Under the direct or indirect supervision of a physician, treat injuries or illness using advanced life support techniques and medications.
These techniques may include the following : airway management with endotracheal tubes or cricothyroidotomy, intravenous therapy, heart monitoring with an Electrocardiographic (ECG) device, defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion, administration of any type of parenterally, orally, or topically approved medication or solution, needle chest decompression, gastric and oral / tracheal suctioning, and all Basic Life Support techniques.
- Extricate patients from entrapment.
- Provide special rescue services where trained in those specific areas.
- Perform triaging of patients and management of mass casualty situations.
- Lift and moves patients.
- Utilize specialized communication equipment to consult with physicians and / or notify hospitals of patient's condition.
- Complete detailed documentation on patient care and transport.
- Understand and use appropriate state and federal regulations pertaining to EMS, confined space, hazardous materials, incident command system, bloodborne pathogens, airborne pathogens, and controlled substances.
- Reports verbally to receiving Physician as to the patient's condition and interventions performed.
- Maintains, cleans, restocks emergency supplies and equipment.
- Attends continuing medical education (CME) on an ongoing basis.

- NREMT-Paramedic
- Alabama State Paramedic EMSP license
- ACLS certification
- NIMS Training
- PALS Training
- CPR certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of appropriate safety equipment when exposure to infectious organisms, agents, and toxic chemicals.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, staff, physicians, support agencies, vendors, onboard personal, and clinics.
- Critical thinking skills with the ability to evaluate and interpret information and make decisions with a partner once trained.
- Ability to remain calm during stressful situations.
- Ability to respond to phone calls and emails quickly.
- Ability to mix own medications with correct knowledge of proper concentrations.

Physical Demands
- Ability to lift a minimum of 150 lbs. independently, more with assistance.
- Ability to repeatedly twist, squat, stoop, bend, grasp, use fine hand coordination, push, and pull.
- Ability to work in a confined and mobile environment.
