What Your Job Will Be Like

The Metallurgy and Welding Engineering team is seeking support from an R&D Undergraduate Year-Round Intern, specifically for our Weld Team! This intern will assist the team with welding processing and operations including metal joining, process design, and joining evaluation and analysis. We work on applications and systems critical to national security with focus on applied research and development. The intern should be majoring in mechanical, materials, or related engineering or STEM discipline. This individual should be able to work on site in Albuquerque, NM as their school schedule allows. They should have laboratory experience and be able to use common software. Any knowledge of scientific software e.g., Solidworks, Thermo-Calc, Matlab, etc. is a plus. Knowledge of metallurgy and / or novel welding methods is extraordinarily helpful.

On any given day, you may be called on to :

  • Operate lab-scale laser welders, including lasers at both infrared and blue wavelengths
  • Conduct experiments and operations with resistance welding, tube welding, and other novel welding means
  • Evaluate metal joined samples through metallographic analysis
  • Apply fundamental materials and metallurgical process development and property characterization principles to Metallurgy issues and challenges
  • Interact with members of the team to develop process parameters
  • Evaluate, assess, and handle data and create and modify graphic representations of data
  • Participate in team meetings and projects

Salary Range

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements :

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 / 4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
  • Note : If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

    Qualifications We Desire

  • Enrolled in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other key-focus area Engineering degree program.
  • Completion of Basic Science and Engineering Undergraduate Laboratories, Basic Physics, Basic Chemistry, and Introduction to Engineering Courses.
  • Experience with applied research related to relationships between material processing and resultant material behaviors
  • Experience with joining technologies such as other welding processes, soldering, or brazing, and related physical metallurgy concepts

  • Security Clearance

    Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment / education verifications.
