Job description

Road Maintenance Crew Chief

King County Road Services Division has a Special Duty Assignment opportunity for a Road Maintenance Crew Chief. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated people leader who has experience with oversight of the day to day activities of a construction or maintenance crew. Job Duties

  • Plan and organize crew work activities; ensure required material and equipment are available to perform work.
  • Monitor onsite work, provide direction / guidance to work crews, and implement corrective measures to improve performance.
  • Ensure work crews comply with all safety standards and regulations (e.g., OSHA / WISHA).
  • Ensure work crews comply with environmental standards, codes, regulations, and specifications.
  • Monitor job site safety by identifying safety hazards and unsafe practices, and initiate / recommend corrective actions.
  • Respond to / investigate routine citizen complaints related to drainage, road surfaces, shoulders, signage, and rights-of-way, ensuring timely appropriate remedial action.
  • Prepare job cost estimates for materials, labor, and equipment required for assigned projects.
  • Inspect roads and rights-of-way to identify traffic hazards and report defects to appropriate authorities.
  • Monitor and document employee performance and time reporting. Implement corrective actions when needed, and escalate issues to supervisors when appropriate.
  • Track and record crew work hours and prepare routine documentation of labor and material usage.
  • Respond to emergency weather events such as flooding, snow, ice and windstorms, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Minimum of two (2) years work experience as a road maintenance worker or equivalent combination of experience in construction, road maintenance, or other heavy manual labor areas.
  • Knowledge of and can adhere to safety procedures, regulations, and policies for the environment, construction, road maintenance or other heavy manual labor areas (including OSHA / WISHA, fall protection, confined space, and hazardous materials).
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and manage a diverse crew, fostering a work environment that values diversity, fairness, respect, and inclusiveness.
  • Knowledge of workload planning, resource allocation, project scheduling, procurement, and cost estimation for road maintenance and construction projects.
  • Ability to supervise onsite work, provide direction, and evaluate performance of work crews.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting maps, road index maps, blueprints, and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to recognize, assess, and resolve complex technical problems or hazards in the field.
  • Strong judgment and conflict-resolution skills; ability to manage crew / personnel issues effectively.
  • Ability to identify personnel and maintenance issues and escalate them appropriately to supervisors.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to provide clear instructions to crews and interact professionally with supervisors, vendors, and the public.
  • Demonstrates long-term planning and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in basic math calculations; Skill in reading maps, toad index maps, blueprints, and schematic drawings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams) and web-based tools used for job estimates, dispatch and reporting.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Ability to have predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Desired Qualifications :

  • Knowledge of Human Resource policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of King County Personnel Guidelines and Union Contracts covering maintenance employees in the trades and crafts.
  • Experience utilizing maintenance management systems, such as Cityworks, Maximo, Hansen, or M5.
  • Necessary Requirements :

  • Have a valid Washington State Driver's license, or the ability to obtain one prior to start date.
  • An offer of employment will be contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Work Location :

  • The current location is Black Diamond, however this posting may be used to fill future special duty positions in other locations over the next six months.
  • Supplemental Information

  • Written Exam / Interview : Those candidates who pass the initial screening will be invited to take a written exam the week of November 10, 2025. Only those who pass the written exam will advance to interviews starting the week of November 17, 2025.
  • Who May Apply : This recruitment is only open to King County Department of Local Services employees, and is being used to fill one (1) Special Duty Assignment (SDA) position which is anticipated to last up to six months, and may be used to fill future special duty positions over the next six months. Special duty opportunities are open only to current King County career service employees who have completed their initial probation. Special duty applicants must have approval from their current supervisor to accept an assignment. Current employees selected for special duty will be compensated based upon the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement, King County Personnel Guidelines, or Coalition Labor Agreement for their base assignment.
  • Application Process : A full and complete King County application is required. Applicants will be screened for clarity, completeness, and competitiveness. The most competitive candidates may be invited to participate in one or more interviews.   • Work Schedule : The work schedule will consist of five, eight-hour days in the fall / winter, Monday Friday, 7 : 00 am 3 : 30 pm, and four, ten-hour days in the spring / summer, Monday Thursday, 6 : 00 am 4 : 30 pm. This position is Non-Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay. Working extended shifts, after-hours, mandatory overtime, weekends, callouts and holidays may be required in emergency circumstances, such as inclement weather and / or special projects, which can vary based upon business need, season and weather.
  • Work Location : The current location is Black Diamond, however this posting may be used to fill future special duty positions in other locations over the next six months.
  • Emergency Designation Status : First Responder - Employees who, in the early stages of an incident, are responsible for protecting and preserving life, property, evidence, the environment, and restoring order.
