Overview
The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. seeks a Daily Living Skills Provider, Low Vision Community in Seattle, WA within the Employment and Community Services department (ECS) Independent Living Program.
Role
Candidates who are considered for this role must currently hold or be in the process of obtaining one (ideally 2) of the following certifications :
- Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS)
- Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT)
- Certified Low Vision Therapist (CLVT)
- Registered Occupational Therapist (OTR)
This role serves a 5 county area and most clients are located in King County. Prior O&M experience is not required, and we are willing to speak to graduating students and those who are newly certified. The role is for working age adults.
Responsibilities
Teach skills of independent livingAssess home environment and recommend approaches to enhance independence (e.g., marking appliances, diabetic management / medicine management, and other in-home skills)Assess and provide training on adaptive communications skills, including introduction to accessibility techniques for smartphones / tabletsAssess basic low vision needs for community membersMake appropriate referrals such as for Orientation and Mobility, including navigating and basic cane skillsProvide training on devices to make best use of remaining vision as neededProvide presentations, education / consultation and technical assistance to community members and organizations as approvedWork cooperatively with coworkersComplete initial phone assessments and schedulingAttend staff, program and department meetings as scheduledMonitor and maintain stock of low vision and mobility related equipment for purchases and / or useParticipate and / or support ECS Department initiatives as needed (such as DeafBlind Retreat) and Lighthouse Strategic Plan initiativesParticipate in development of program-wide goals and measurementsDeliver services defined in grants and contractsDevelop and maintain positive relationships in the low vision professional arenaMaintain files, provide documentation, data collection, reports, and summaries as needed & required; including ILID and Apricot on a timely basisMaintain certification(s)Other duties as assignedMinimum Requirements
Demonstrated knowledge of a wide range of low vision aids and devicesAbility to problem solve effectivelyAbility to take initiative, function autonomously, and be dependableAbility to manage multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervisionAbility to produce high-quality written documents, including correspondence, reports, etcComprehensive knowledge of PC applications, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, browser, and database softwareProfessional demeanorDemonstrated excellent written and interpersonal communication skillsWillingness to work as a team memberMature judgment and sensitivity in interpersonal relations and among diverse groupsAbility to meet the background and education / experience levels required for ILP / DSB contracts requiredACVREP certification requiredDual competency in Occupational Therapy, Orientation & Mobility and Rehabilitation Teaching or CLVT strongly preferredAbility to work schedule as assignedIf a driver, must have a good driving recordThis job requires travel in the field to peoples' homes and in the community on a daily basisBenefits
