Job description

Overview

A Principal, Mechanical Engineer for Data Center Eng, Mech Products & Services at AWS Infrastructure Services. This role focuses on the design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS global infrastructure, including data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure continuous cloud access. You will work on challenging problems with a broad impact on the supply chain and cost, joining a diverse team of engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other roles across AWS.

You will work within the Mechanical Products and Services team to drive rapid innovation in mechanical cooling and controls systems for AWS data centers, and you will help develop and deploy the next generation of air handling infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Lead innovative, high-performance teams of technical associates under challenging timelines
  • Demonstrate strong engineering judgement and provide recommendations under uncertainty
  • Apply data-driven, detail-oriented problem solving
  • Utilize extensive experience in mechanical engineering, product development, and data center cooling technology
  • Collaborate with global mechanical equipment suppliers and manufacturers on new technology development
  • Build trust and relationships with stakeholders (e.g., reliability, operations, design, compliance)
  • Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographic zones
  • Communicate complex systems in clear, concise language
  • Support operations including failure mode and root cause analysis, maintenance and troubleshooting, and operating procedure reviews for mechanical and electrical issues
  • Incorporate customer feedback to improve product reliability and availability
  • Contribute to the global knowledge base and drive continuous improvement at scale

Role Details

This is an individual contributor role with travel expected to be approximately 30% to AWS offices, data centers, suppliers, vendors, and product validation tests. Some international travel may be required. The role involves developing infrastructure solutions for liquid-cooled and air-cooled racks and working with AWS builders and third-party manufacturers.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering or equivalent domain-specific technical experience
  • 7+ years in data center design and product development / HVAC design
  • 5+ years of experience leading teams of 5-25 associates with a track record of success
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering
  • Ability to drive a team where problem and strategy may not be defined
  • Influences strategy and workforce planning for long-term needs
  • Deep understanding of cooling infrastructure in data centers
