The Opportunity

Getting goods into the US can be difficult for our customers, and we are looking for someone who isn't afraid of a challenge. As a Customs Specialist, you will be the bridge between our customer and US government entities like US Customs, FDA, and USDA. We are looking for someone that loves details. Most of your day will be spent reviewing documents, entering accurate data for Customs and ensuring our entries are compliant to US standards. We need someone who can work collaboratively in a team, but also able to work independently. Delays, issues, and problems arise every day in logistics, so the ability to keep cool and act proactively is paramount. You will be part of the Customs department at Steam which consists of a mixture of veterans and newbies in the industry. We want someone that is looking to grow their career with the expectation of preparing and applying for a US Customs Broker's License (only 14,454 brokers in the world!). We will pay for all study materials and testing up to 3 times!

• Analyzing documentation, sorting and matching HTS codes, and capturing the correct currency valuations from Commercial Documents is key.
• Can you guide the client through an amazing customer experience?
• Complex and difficult puzzles (also known as problems) are something you thrive on uncovering and solving for your customers.
• You can show patience and empathy while having a heart of a teacher towards the customer.
• Proactiveness and having a sense of urgency is in your DNA.
• Ability to engage our ocean carriers, airlines, terminals, and railyards professionally but with a sense of urgency obtain the documentation and information you need.
• Confidently discuss with a client that a container is held up at the port / rail, precisely explain what is needed and provide them with an easy to understand solution.
• A drive to exceed your own expectations will set you up for success.
• Customs Clearance is all about accuracy and timeliness, and we strive to have the customs entry submitted 5 days prior to Port ETA.
• Like to follow world news, geo-politics, global trade policies? Us too!
• Helping our clients understand tariff and duty complexities (China Trade War anyone?).
• Understanding Free Trade Agreements and navigating through various country specific documentation.
• High level of computer literacy aka no paper. All digital. Must know how to navigate masterfully with Microsoft Suite and learn our software system.
• Speed of execution is important, but quality of execution is more important!
