The Program COMX111US is an introductory public speaking course that serves undergraduate students from the freshman to senior level from all majors. It is a University Seminar (US) Core 2.0 course that meets requirements for oral communications skills, critical thinking and academic discourse. The curriculum provides an overview of the theories, concepts, and principles of public speaking, to include audience analysis, evidence, sensory aids, small group communication, ethics and listening. Students apply these concepts and principles through preparation and delivery of impromptu, informative, persuasive, and group presentations. The structure of the course includes one weekly lecture presented by an individual instructor, which is connected to multiple recitation sections, all facilitated by that instructor. The lecture may serve 100+ students, while each recitation section serves a maximum of 20 students. This allows the students and instructor to build personal and academic connections. There are multiple COMX 111US instructors, each assigned to one lecture and multiple recitation sections, who work as a team to create, facilitate and regularly assess the curriculum. The Department University Studies is the academic program of choice for first-year students who choose to explore the many degrees and majors offered at MSU prior to declaring. University Studies also works with continuing students who are transitioning between majors. At University Studies, we offer complete academic advising for our own majors as well as students in the Pre-Med option and students in transition. We also teach approximately 45 sections of US 101US — the University Studies First-Year Seminar and approximately 20 sections of COMX 111US – Intro to Public Speaking each year, both of which are foundational components of MSU’s Core 2.0, serving 1500 students each year. One of the objectives of University Studies is to contribute to a successful first year for MSU undergraduates. Through professional academic advising and high-quality instruction, we help students understand the possibilities and responsibilities of the academic experience through an exploration of their interests and goals and the development of intellectual knowledge and skills.
