This role is a senior bridge inspection engineer for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). The engineer conducts inspections of bridges, large culverts and retaining walls to maintain public safety, protect public investment and ensure confidence in infrastructure. The engineer supervises, trains and performs performance reviews for area bridge inspectors. Bridge inspectors must conform to the National Bridge Inspection Standards, assign ratings and report findings. Inspector duties include performing biennial inspections, large culvert inspections, retaining wall inspections, approvals and special inspections.
A Day In The Life
- Manages the Bridge Inspection Team for the department's ongoing operations; continually develops and implements improvements to the team's workflow.
- Performs biennial inspections for INDOT bridges.
- Performs inspections of large culverts (small structures 4 to 20 in span).
- Performs inspections of retaining walls.
- Reviews & approves some bridge inspection reports.
- Determines specialized bridge inspection needs.
- Quality Control Officer performs some QC office & field reviews.
- Stays on-call to perform emergency damage inspections, i.e. collision, high water.
- Performs fracture critical & in-depth inspections using access equipment.
- Performs special inspections for bridges with concerns.
- Performs post-construction inspections for bridges.
- Prepares & submits reports for completed inspections.
- Reports deficiencies to bridge maintenance crew for corrective action.
- Submits bridges recommended to be programmed, including mini-scope & cost estimate.
- Determines work needed to repair damaged bridges & coordinates the repairs.
- Monitors the project schedules of all bridges of concern monthly.
- Other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need For Success
Registered Professional Engineer in Indiana or the ability to obtain such a license within 6–9 months of hire.Bridge Inspection Team Leader certification, or the ability to obtain such certification within 12–15 months of hire.Understanding of how bridge and large culvert members function, and the ability to recognize the impact of a defect on load-carrying capability.Knowledge of inspection principles, practices, techniques and the ability to apply them as required.Ability to read and interpret technical documents including design, rehabilitation plans, roadway plans, inspection reports, maintenance records, geotechnical data, hydraulic data and maps.Knowledge of bridge maintenance principles, practices, methods and techniques related to maintenance of bridges and large culverts.Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to follow instructions.Basic computer skills and the ability to quickly become proficient in new programs and databases.Valid Indiana driver's license.Physical requirements include standing, walking, crouching, climbing, balancing, kneeling, reaching, lifting, grasping, sensing hazardous fumes, hearing and talking (including using a cell phone).Vision requirements include peripheral, close, distant, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.Ability to use tools including a clipboard, digital camera, chipping hammer, range pole, measuring tape and handheld spotlight.Ability to remain calm during emergencies.Knowledge, understanding, and application of the practices and methods in State Transportation.Highly desired : NHI course "Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges".Highly desired : NHI course "Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges".May attend annual bridge inspections.Preferred Training Includes, But Not Limited To
Demonstrated experience using inspection access vehicles and platforms for executing arms-reach inspections.Certified asbestos inspector licensure or willingness to obtain.Certified SPRAT Level 1 climber or higher, or willingness to obtain.Supervisory Responsibilities / Direct Reports

Skills
Registered Professional Engineer in Indiana, or the ability to obtain a PE license within 6–9 months of hire (Required). 5 Years knowledge of inspection principles, 5 Years ability to read technical documents, 5 Years communication skills, Basic computer skills, Tool usage, Calm in emergencies, Physical and vision requirements, State Transportation knowledge, Bridge Inspection Team Leader certification (Highly desired), Bridge maintenance knowledge (Highly desired). NHI courses (Highly desired).
