Solid Waste Collection Manager
To plan, organize, direct, and supervise the collection, transportation, and disposal of solid waste; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
Examples of Duties
Essential functions include : supervising crews and personnel performing solid waste activities, planning and prioritizing the work of staff operating solid waste collection vehicles, performing the most complex work, preparing various reports on operations and activities, participating in the selection of staff, supervising, inspecting, and participating in the operation and use of equipment, vehicles, and tools on job sites, making recommendations on means and methods to be used in the efficient collection, transportation, and disposal of solid waste, keeping records, preparing and submitting reports on work performed in solid waste collection, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, investigating complaints, accidents, and route completion, and responding to emergency and after hours calls.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, equipment, and materials used in solid waste collection, transportation, and disposal; considerable knowledge of safe work practices and hazards associated with solid waste collection, transportation, and disposal; knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance evaluation; knowledge of principles and practices of project prioritization, productivity measurement, long range planning, and budget control; ability to organize, implement, direct, and perform work involved in the safe operation of solid waste collection equipment; ability to train assigned personnel in safe work practices; ability to standardize materials and methods and estimate time, materials, and equipment needed to perform solid waste related work; ability to operate a variety of heavy power-driven equipment including solid waste collection vehicles; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports; ability to understand, prepare and implement technical and general instructions; ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to maintain consistent attendance and respond to emergencies during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum required qualifications include : high school diploma / GED, valid Class A CDL license at the time of placement, two years of municipal or private sector experience in solid waste collection, transportation, and disposal, and the ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor (over 50lbs.). Preferred qualifications include specialized training or formal education in logistics and operations management, specialized training in the operation of solid waste collection vehicles, and knowledge and experience in the operation of landfills, collections stations, and transfer stations.
