Job Summary

Provides direct, procedural care for patients in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Communicates continuously with the physician and Cath / IR Lab staff about patient condition. Assists physician during invasive and noninvasive procedures through monitoring and / or scrubbing procedures. Operates all equipment safely and correctly. Performs imaging procedures and is responsible for patient safety protocols. Participates in the performance improvement and continuous quality (CQI) improvement activities of the Cardiac Cath / IR Lab. Supports and maintains a culture of people, safety, service excellence and quality, fiscal responsibility Resource for Radiation Safety for the department. May work in other units as oriented / assigned.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities

People : Assist other ancillary departments with procedural processes requiring subject-matter expert care. Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationships with coworkers for the patient's benefit, through email, SBAR, and daily interaction.

Service : Approaches patient and family in a kind, gentle manner. Treating them with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious / spiritual needs of patients and their families. Demonstrates the ability to handle emergency situations during low-, moderate- and high-risk procedures. Ensuring that patient has understanding pre-, intra- and post-operative processes, and education performed pre-operatively for recovery.

Safety : Performs call for Cath Lab and Interventional Radiology, responding to all Call-back notifications within 5 minutes, and assumes patient care within 30 minutes of notification (able to take patient at 30 minutes). Checks LMP prior to procedure for all women of childbearing years. Ensures proper function / operation of radiological equipment and radiation safety of the team and patients. Notify appropriate personnel if safety processes are contaminated or unsafe, to eliminate untoward events. Identifies situations that put patient at increased risk for cardiac arrest, and modifies processes to keep patients hemodynamic status stable. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical / health care errors. Ensures use of universal protocol on all procedures, and maintains aseptic technique where necessary. Strict adoption of radiological processes per protocol. Practice safe administration of medications (8 rights of medication administration) within the critical care setting based on age, weight, labs and medical condition of patient, and individualizes plan of administration. Responsible as subject matter expert regarding hematoma management post-procedure for hospital staff. Adherent to infection control policies, including PPE use.

Quality : Respects patient's confidentiality and the right to privacy. Ensures that documentation is correct for procedural processes. Actively participates in assigned or volunteered continuous performance improvement (CQI) activities. Reports significant events such as near misses, adverse events, patient / family complaints, and any situation that affects the safe delivery of patient-centered care in a timely manner. Proactive, rounding with team members on the unit, and identifies opportunities for improvement. Ensuring proper environmental conditions are met for surgical / radiological equipment and supplies safety (humidity, temperature).

Finance : Properly documents procedural charges of without error. Responsible in maintaining records and handling of special equipment, monitors and instruments, and notifies manager if preventative maintenance is needed to preserve equipment function. Appropriately uses timekeeping system, takes proactive approach to minimizing the use of overtime, and takes ownership to allocate time in other departments.

Professional Growth : Maintains competencies in procedures, processes, protocols, supplies, equipment, and critical care knowledge base (specifically : intra-aortic balloon pump, mechanical thrombectomy, dysrhythmia interpretation, hemodynamics, STEMI and arterial / venous embolization management and ACLS / BLS). Stays current with changes in technology, techniques, equipment through continuing education, seminars / conferences, professional societies and journals. Maintains departmental specific education and competencies. Participates in patient-care related task forces, committees, council, or other organized processes within the facility.

Other Duties : On-Call duties, 10-12 days average per month

Minimum Qualifications

Education / Experience / License and Certifications : Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology, either college affiliated or hospital trained. Have documentation of training appropriate for POCT, including college transcripts. Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Certified and unrestricted by the State of Wyoming to practice and administer radiation. Current BLS certification, required. Current ACLS certification, preferred. RCIS RT(VI) or RT(CI), preferred. Cardiac Cath / EP Lab, Interventional Radiology, emergency care or surgery experience, preferred. Hemodynamics and Cardiac Dysrhythmia preferred within first 12 months.

Additional Skills : Basic computer knowledge. Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred. Organization skills Participates in continuing education activities within the department and organization Attends and actively participates in departmental staff meetings Keeps up to date with clinical practice and evidence-based practice guidelines Stays abreast of organizational policies and procedures Specific demands not listed : Possible exposure to blood and or body fluids / infectious disease / hazardous waste requiring the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Exposure to odorous chemicals / specimens and Latex products. Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening is required.
