Unit Profile : Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

# of Beds : 18 (expanding to 27 beds by June / July 2023)

Nurse-to-Patient Ratios : 1 : 2 (occasionally 1 : 3 for overflow or PCU downgrade patients)

Certifications

Required : BLS, ACLS

(NIHSS requirement removed by Manager Sherri Adams on 1 / 6 / 2025)

Preferred : PALS, NIHSS, TNCC

(TNCC added as a requirement effective 10 / 21 / 2026 per Tracey Holmes)

Patient Population & Case Types

Critically ill patients with complex and life-threatening conditions

Common cases include :

Sepsis

Acute MI

Renal failure

Post-vascular procedures

Stroke, TIA, seizures

Lumbar drains (added per Sherri on 7 / 21 / 2025)

ARDS and ventilator management

CV procedures

Titration of critical drips (especially vasopressors and sedation)

Age Groups : Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric

Experience Requirements

Minimum 2 years of critical care experience

CRRT and IABP experience required; Impella experience preferred

Travel experience required

No travel duos accepted

Medications & Equipment

Titration Required : Yes

Common Drips : Levophed, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Heparin, Insulin

RT Equipment : BiPAP, CPAP, mechanical ventilation (via trach or ET tube), telemetry, IV pumps, SCDs, specialty beds

Support & Coverage

Charge Nurse : Present, typically without a patient assignment

House Supervisor : 24 / 7 coverage

Hospitalist : In-house 24 / 7

Intensivist : Not always in-house

Respiratory Therapy : Available 24 / 7 (not stationed in ICU, but readily accessible)

Telemetry

Yes — monitored by RNs (no monitor techs)

Shifts & Scheduling

Shift Times :

Day : 6 : 45 AM – 7 : 15 PM

Night : 6 : 45 PM – 7 : 15 AM

Scheduling : Manager-created; block scheduling available (especially for nights)

Weekend Requirement : Every other weekend (Fri–Sat or Sat–Mon)

Holiday Requirement : Rotational with core staff

Call / Standby : None

Floating Requirements

Float to Stepdown Unit as needed

If Stepdown not needed → may float to Med-Surg / Telemetry or to ED to care for ICU / Stepdown boarders

Floating to Med-Surg is rare

If floated, RNs take a full patient load (5–6 patients)

Floating rotation is shared — travelers are not always first to float

Dress Code

RNs / LPNs : Navy scrubs

C.N.As / Monitor Techs : Dark grey / pewter scrubs

Scrub Rules : Solid colors only (no embroidery or patterns)

Outerwear : WVU Medicine or solid fleece zip-ups (grey, black, navy, or royal blue)

Undershirts : Solid white, grey, or black matching the top color

Shoes : Closed-toe only — no crocs

Orientation

Day 1 : General hospital orientation

Day 2 : Full-day nursing orientation (for RNs / LPNs)

Computer Training : ½ day for CNAs

Full day for nurses

Unit Orientation : Two 12-hour shifts with a preceptor

Initial Skills Checklist : Abbreviated version due within 90 days of start date
