Description

Responsible for overseeing and supervising semi-skilled and skilled employees performing groundskeeping, landscape maintenance, and construction work for the County's grounds, gateway corridors, and facilities. Responsible for implementing the maintenance of trees, shrubs, and plants within County and Park grounds. Follows maintenance schedules, trims, prunes, performs IPM, and applies herbicides and pesticides. Ensures employees receive proper training and that performance and quality standards are met and maintained. Responsible for performing routine administrative and personnel duties.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent, and 3 to 5 years of supervisory experience in grounds maintenance work, preferably in turf and landscape maintenance, irrigation installation and maintenance, sports turf maintenance and grounds maintenance equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with good driving record mandatory.

Must be licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Certified Pesticide Applicator (State Category 3a and 3b), or must be willing to obtain such license within 6 months of employment.

Completion of a Landscape Crew Manager Certification through the Mid-Atlantic Short Course; York County Master Gardener Program, or another equivalent horticulture or landscape certification preferred.

Must be dependable and in good physical condition.

Safety shoes required.

Work is performed outdoors under all types of weather conditions with exposure to the usual hazards associated with outside maintenance and construction work.

This position is considered an Essential Position (County designation as ALPHA) which requires the employee to report to work during inclement and extreme weather conditions, often outside normally scheduled work hours, or as notified by a supervisor.

Physical Demands

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including tandem dump trucks, tractor-trailers, push and riding mowers, blowers, power tools, etc. There is a great deal of walking and getting in and out of vehicles when checking work in progress. There is bending, stooping, walking, and lifting when performing the work of the crew.
